Bitmain Technologies Ltd., or Bitmain, is a privately owned company headquartered in Beijing, China, with offices in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Fuzhou, US, Israel, Netherlands and Switzerland. It is the world's largest designer of ASIC chips for Bitcoin mining. [1] As of October of 2018, the company controls 85% of the BTC mining ASIC market, 35% of the hashing power, and also operates BTC.com and Antpool, two of the largest bitcoin mining pools. [2]

Bitmain has been reported to be highly profitable, [3] and had a net profit of $742.7 million in the first half of 2018, [4] but operating cash flow is negative. [1] The company grew 328.2% annually from 2015 to 2017. [4] Their main business is the sale of mining rigs which accounts for 96% of their revenue, whereas mining crypto currencies brings in another 3% according to the company's financial documents. [5]

History

Bitmain was founded by Jihan Wu and Micree Zhan in 2013. Prior to founding Bitmain, Wu was a financial analyst and private equity fund manager and Zhan was running DivaIP, a startup that allowed users to stream television to a computer screen via a set-top box. [6] They originally met while Zhan was trying to raise money for the startup, however after discovering Bitcoin and becoming the first person to translate Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin white paper into Chinese, he approached Zhan for help in developing a new ASIC chip capable of mining bitcoin, at which point Bitmain was founded.

In June 2018, Wu told Bloomberg that Bitmain is considering an IPO for producing capital to expand its producing hardware. [7] The company completed its $1 billion pre-IPO registration with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in August, [8] and filed for IPO in September. [4] [1]

AsicBoost

In April of 2017, Bitmain released a blog post "Regarding Recent Allegations Smear Campaigns" responding to Gregory Maxwell's proposal. [9] Gregory Maxwell in his proposal talked about a potential shortcut on the Bitcoin PoW algorithm that can save 20% on energy cost, a method patented by Timo Hanke and Sergio Demian Lerner called AsicBoost and proposed a potential solution. [10] Bitmain in their blog post response confirmed the existence of circuit design for AsicBoost in their ASIC chips but however claim to have only used AsicBoost on testnet and never on mainnet. [9] On October 22 of 2018, Bitmain released a new firmware that activated what they called "Overt AsicBoost" citing the recent trend of new manufacturers of hardware advertising the use of "AsicBoost" as the reason why they're releasing this feature now. This "Overt AsicBoost" works in Antminers using the BM1387 ASIC chip such as the Antminer R4, S9i, S9j, T9 and T9+. [11]

Bitcoin Cash

Bitcoin cash (BCH), is a crypto currency and a hardfork of Bitcoin that have been strongly supported by Jihan Wu, one of Bitmain's founder. He have made numerous tweets supporting Bitcoin cash and its community. [12] Bitmain is heavily invested into Bitcoin cash. When Bitmain announced it was going IPO, the price of Bitcoin Cash jumped 20%. [13] In an effort to promote BCH growth, Antpool which Bitmain operates committed themselves to burning 12% of the transactions fees they collect by sending them to empty addresses which they believe will benefit the holder of BCH. [14] Bitmain is also partner and sponsor of BCH Devcon, a hackathon event for BCH. [15]

Initial Public Offering(IPO)

Bitmain Technologies filed for IPO on September 26th, 2018 with the Hong Kong regulatory agency and released their first public financial statement and ending the speculation on the company's plans at a time where Bitcoin prices have dropped 65% as compared to December 2017 which have hurt mining hardware sale that accounts 96% of their revenue. [16] [17] Bitmain will use a dual class share structure. In Bitmain's case, this means the share held by company's founders would count as 10 votes. [17]

Houston Rockets Sponsorship

On September 19th 2018, AntPool announced on Facebook that it is going to be an official sponsor of the Houston Rockets for the 2018-2019 NBA season. [18] [19] This is part of AntPool's strategy to bring awareness to the cryptocurrency community and strengthen adoption rates by educating the public. According to Haijiao Li, AntPool's overseas operations manager. [20]

As the cryptocurrency industry around the globe continues to evolve and develop, it is going to be more and more important for companies like AntPool to lead the conversation and conversion of consumers to adopt and understand digital currencies. It is an exciting time, and we welcome Rockets fans and those traveling to Houston to visit our showcase at Toyota Center and learn more about the technology that will change the world.

Script/Litecoin Miner

Antminer L3+ is a script miner that uses Bitmain's BM1485 ASIC chip. [38] The Antminer L3+ uses 288 of these chips on 4 different boards in an aluminum case with 2 fans controlled by Texas Instruments' AM335x 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor. The Antminer L3++ employs the same number of chips and on the same number of boards. [39] It is listed on Bitmain's product page that the noise level of Antminer L3++ is 76dB and that it takes 9 x 6-pin PCI-e connectors.
