Jason Cobarrubias sometimes called 'chico' is a Mexican- American amateur sports broadcaster from Canby, Oregon. born may 21st, 1980 he grew up in canby and graduated from canby high school in 1999. then attended Portland State University until 2001.

as a child his sports interests was limited to BMX cycling, skateboarding, motorcycles, All-terrain vehicles and monster truck racing. during middle school he became interested in main stream sports.

he started by playing organized basketball in 6th grade through 8th grade. in 8th grade he became an equipment manager for canby high school American football and head coach mike doty. after football that school year he met canby high basketball coach dennis burke, a nephew of NBA coach Rick Adelman. jason became a manager for burke while still playing basketball for his middle school.

in high school jason continued to manage both varsity team football and basketball. he enjoyed alot of success as a manager. In football the team made the playoffs all 5 years including 2 runs to the state quarterfinals during his 8th grade and junior years, the team also won 3 league titles during his 8th grade, junior and senior years.

as a sophmore he beat out 2 other student managers for the 'manager of the year' award in football. the award came after he had almost been kicked off the team and replaced at that position for poor effort in managerial duties. he won the award as a result of hard work just to stay on the team. it also signaled that he was determined to stay involved in sports.

between his junior and senior years in high school jason was honored with the opportunity to manage at the 1998 oregon bowl high school football all-star game for the north team of oregon. the north All-Stars won a 20-17 come from behind thriller on a last second play. down 14-17 and with time running out. the north lined up near the south's goal line and snapped the ball with 1 second left. quarterback juston wood of david douglas high school in Portland, Oregon took the snap and found tight end nate wente of canby open in the end zone for the game winning catch and score. the winning play was a connection from jason's eventual teammate at portland state to his former teammate and canby high. what an awesome connection!

in basketball he was the lone manager and the team made the state playoffs in his sophmore,junior, and senior seasons. all three times the team was one win away from the state tournament, but suffered defeat. it was a hard lesson of something just not meant to be. the basketball team did win 2 league titles in jason's sophmore and junior years.

jason had his ups and downs in academics so sports helped him to continue to attend school and eventually graduate from high school.

after high school he attended portland state university in portland,oregon. while at psu he was a student manager for the vikings football team from 1999- 2003. psu football had alot of success. the biggest win came in 1999 vs 1-AA national power and reigning Big Sky Conference champion University of Montana. the vikings and grizzlies went back and forth on the scoreboard and ended up playing into overtime. in overtime psu scored 1st from 25 yards out. montana answered, but on the point after field goal attempt, the vikings blocked the kick and tanner cole took the ball all the way to the opposite end zone for the 51-48 win. that victory is still the biggest in portland state history.

also during college jason got a few opportunitys to work with geoff clark the equipment manager for the Portland Trailblazers. a definate learning expierience at the professional sports level. one that he hopes can help him into a future career in pro sports.

after college jason decided to pursue a career in sports media. he began by doing volunteer high school football reporting for oregonlive.com a website that covers everything in oregon. he also began to keep stats for canby football as part of an independent venture to stay involved and learn more about sports statistics.

in 2002- 2003 he broke into amateur broadcasting by announcing canby high school basketball games for octs channel 5 public access channel in canby,oregon. he also was a cameraman for canby high school wrestling and the local PRCA rodeo.

since 2003 jason has only been keeping statistics for canby football and basketball and taping a few canby wrestling matches. he hopes to continue his sports career by pursuing a opportunity in announcing high school games on the internet or community college games on television and by going back to school to obtain his Academic degree.
