Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Forces, FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleets leads expeditionary Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Forces in support of FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleet operations fighting today's War on Terror and ready to engage tomorrow's adversaries. We promote regional security and enhancement of theater security cooperation through close interoperation with allied forces, friendly nations, and other U.S. military services.

Indonesia Struck by Series of Earthquakes

A major earthquake struck the Indonesian Island of Sumatra on 30 Sept 2009 at 8:52AM local time. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, reported by the country's seismological agency. Its epicenter was located about 6 to 15 miles deep, making it a more devastating, shallow earthquake. The earthquake struck 96 miles north-northwest from Bengkulu on Indonesia's Sumatra (141 Miles southeast from Padang). At 9:20AM local time, an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.5 rattled the island nation. On the following Thursday, yet another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 violently shook the earth beneath the citizens feet of Padang. Combined loss of life for these two events is estimated to be in the thousands, while destruction to property is massive. BNO News

The Government of Indonesia has requested Imagery support to help asess the damage from the series of natural events. Commander Task Force 57/72 CTF-57/72 Homepage has provided a Maritime Patrol Recon Aircraft (P-3C Orion)
