Women who does journalism professionally face prejudices for their gender and are not taken seriously as men. These women are still treated unequally as men in their field. The patriarchy ideology continues to follow them; the idea that women are not capable or able to perform sufficient enough as men. Women in journalism has been facing prejudices in journalism even before the 1890s. [1]

Prejudices

Women of all backgrounds face sexism and discrimination. in a 2018 study, Pew Research Center found that women are three times more likely to experience discrimination because of their gender, it has made it more difficult to succeed and have promotions. There is a considerable difference of gender balance in the workplace. About 37% of women in a male dominate work environment has reported that they faced gender discrimination as if their gender isn’t competent enough to perform equivalently as men. Women receives only 19% less compared to men in wages. [2]

Threats

Journalism comes with a plethora of risks. Women journalist not only face just death threats, being silence and unable to release their coverage but they face gender discrimination, physical and sexual assaults, rape, and murder. These threats are only increasing. In a 2020 survey by UNESCO & International Center for Journalists, about 73% of women journalist said that they experienced online violence based on their profession. In line of their work, these women journalist are being taunted and threatened on a digital space. As a result of these oppressors, it has affected about 26% of the female journalists mentally with 12% of them seeking psychological help.
