The Creeper is an enemy monster found in the game Minecraft.

Appearance and Behavior

Creepers spawn in the Overworld in Minecraft. They hiss and explode when inside of a given radius of the player (usually 2-3 blocks in game space) [1]. Like most monsters in Minecraft, they spawn at night but do not get destroyed during the day as do Skeletons or Undead. Creepers are a mottled shade of green and flash to a lighter shade of green when they are about to detonate. [2]

Origin

Creepers were originally the result of a coding glitch while Notch (Minecraft’s creator) was trying to create a pig. The dimensions of the creature were reversed and the unintentional end result was the Creeper. [3] This incarnation of the Creeper was developed on August 31, 2009. The original version of the Creeper was introduced to Minecraft in Survival Test 0.24 and later the Creeper face was added to the A in the Minecraft logo in Beta version 1.4. [4]

Reception

The Creeper eventually became Mojang’s mascot for Minecraft since it has no real-world parallel and it is easily the most iconic of the game’s creatures. [5]
