In 1987, Wellham lost by one in the vote for preselection as the Liberal

Party candidate for the seat of Carlingford.

Aucher Warner, who later became Solicitor-General and Attorney-General of

Trinidad, was the captain of the first WI team to visit England in 1900. He was 'Plum' Warner's brother.

Alfred Lyttleton (four Tests for Eng in 1880s) was an MP and then Colonial

Secretary in 1903 for the Arthur Balfour government.

Australian Test cricketer, Sam Loxton was a member of the Victorian

parliament for 24 years.

Gil Langley, one of the Australian wicket-keepers in the 1950s, held the

South Australian seat of Unley for the Labor Party between 1962 and 1982.

Frank Worrell's Test and political careers overlapped. He was a senator in

the Jamaican Legislative Council in 1962. He played Test cricket till 1963.

Brian Booth, a former Australian Test captain, stood as a Liberal Party

candidate for the electorate of St. George in 1974 federal election. He lost.

Larry Gomes, the West Indian batsman, contested the seat of Arima in

Trinidad's general election in 1991. I don't know the outcome.

The former South African Test captain Clive van Ryneveld was elected an MP in

1963 from the seat of East London for the Progressive Party.

In 1968-69 Aftab Gul, a student lawyer, became the first cricketer to appear

in a Test while on bail for political offences. He made his debut against England in Lahore. It has been suggested that considering his strong supprt among the students. the Pakistani selectors had no choice but to pick him. He was the founding member of the Peoples Party, once led by Z.A.Bhutto.

William Melton, who appeared in South Africa's first three Tests, later

became the administrator of South Rhodesia.

POLITICAL CURIOSITIES:

Cricket was declared Canada's national sport in 1867 by the country's prime

mininster Sir John MacDonald.

India's 1984-85 tour to Pakistan was abandoned in the middle of the 2nd ODI

after the assasination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Vengsarkar was left at 94 not out.

As a part of the Commomwealth Heads of Government meeting in 1991, a charity

cricket match was held in Zimbabwe. John Major and Bob Hawke opened the innings, scoring 5 and 21 respectively. Other PMs in the match included Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif, who hit three sixes in the knock of 31, and Kennedy Simmonds of St Kitts-Nevis; Granada's PM Nicholas Brathwaite was an umpire.
