Hardcore Nasty was a
Heavy metal band based in
Brunswick,
Ohioin 2004. They were known for their "metalitization" of covers and sounds from a wide spectrum of music genres, and for their live performances. The band's general disdain for an organized approach to performing enabled them to gain a notorious 'here to have fun' reputation throughout the Midwest. Coupled with the wide variety of members that were part of the band, this earned the group a substantial following. Their tickets and playbills were often abbreviated the band's name to "HCN", but were known as "The Nasty" to their fanclub and brief radio performances. Though members came and left as the band progressed, the key four players were Andrew Sholtis (lead vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitar), Samuel Kostyak (rhythm guitar, bass, backing vocals), Matthew Maddonna (lead guitar) and Daniel Macre (percussion, backing vocals). Various other roles were filled by repeat members on the 'revolving door plan', where they would leave the group and return sometime afterward.
In 2004 a garage band known as Ultra Pick had been formed in Brunswick, Ohio with others backing. As the group lost members to other bands, Sholtis began to come watch the group practice. Soon after the lead singer for the group had left, Sholtis volunteered to sing lead vocals during a practice. He was selected to fill the open position for lead vocals. With a new singer, the band evolved into a cover band for 70's and 80's heavy metal, and changed it's name to Hardcore Nasty because at the time, 'it just sounds like it could **** someone off.'
Spring of 2007 brought practice, penning songs and building resources. The group released it's first demo, Whore, in April 2007. Whore featured the band's single 'Mustache Ride' and a cover of Judas Priest's 'Breaking the Law'. It was released to local promoters and soon afterwards the band began to perform at local shows. Throughout 2007 the band added several new members, then promptly gained and lost them as their schedules and time permitted. A proper five-piece band came together in summer of 2007, with Jamie Bush (bass) and Crystal Soto (keyboard, backing vocals). The new female members gave a 'new hotness to the band' that would enable them to reach a greater crowd.
October of 2007 brought a new, self-titled demo, Hardcore Nasty. The second demo for the year included the band's new single 'McNasty' and a cover of Rick James' 'Super Freak'. Later issues of the demo also included the bonus tracks 'Beer Is Good' and 'Women Are Bitches', both spoken word rants. The new demo and lineup gave the band a huge boost, and they were able to play at much larger venues in the Great Lakes area. After reaching a live performance agreement with Metal Blade Records, to open for Forever In Terror during their debut record tour through the end of the year and performances through 2008.
2009 brought another few rounds of live performances in the Great Lakes area. The band's first seven track album In Your Faceholes was in the process of being recorded, but the supporting cast for it were never properly assembled and it was never picked up by Metal Blade. As the band tried a new sound to try and attract new people to back them in future ventures, more members came back, and were cycled out after they didn't agree with the band's shift to a mellower direction.
By the Fall of 2011, the band was stalled, and played it's last full show at their first gig, a coffee shop in Brunswick. HCN never played another full show, with a partial lineup only making two or three song appearances at local venues as a special guest. The band worked less and less on their material, until it was eventually felled completely. The original members agreeing that a full time band was not feasible, agreeing to end Hardcore Nasty a little more than six years after it's assembly.
