PsychoNoetics is part of the new paradigm of thinking that has been emerging and coalescing since the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s. Participants in the emerging paradigm have been called “ Cultural Creatives” [1], and the author estimates their number is much as 25% of the American population. They are found in many fields including theology, philosophy, ecology, economics, health, social science, and education. As such, this paradigm shift is a grassroots phenomenon with many proponents distributed through all fields, approaching a coalescence in the environmental and alternative health movements. Though far from coherent, this new paradigm is being widely described as The Shift, [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Conscious Evolution, [10] [11] [12] Integral Theory, [13] [14] New Tought Movement, and many other less comprehensive names, and fostered greatly by the egalitarian information flow through the Internet.
This way of thinking sees the entire cosmos as a complex system, in which the Earth is one planet, a sub-system in the larger cosmos, and the human species, in turn, comprises yet another systemic component of the earth. In systemic terms, because we human beings have evolved a technology capable of doing significant harm as well as significant good, we stand on the threshold of adversely affecting the entire system of life itself. It becomes incumbent on us to mature psychologically and spiritually in order to transcend our narrow, separate, competitive instincts and work together to further the common interests of the entire system. This may be called a new paradigm philosophy of enlightened self-interest.
Thus, the new paradigm is principally viewed as unfolding around a shift in consciousness. [15] This shift is an integration of Western psychology, Eastern spirituality, quantum physics, and energy medicine. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] Its philosophic and psychological principles are drawn from the philosophy and psychology of Buddhism, Taoism and Advaita Vedanta, the philosophies of Plato, Hegel, Spinoza among other Westerner thinkers, as well as contemporary non-dual psychology and transpersonal psychology, which in turn are built upon the earlier fields of phenomenology and gestalt psychology.
PsychoNoetics is a clinical application within this emerging holistic paradigm, created by psychologist and philosopher of consciousness, Dr. Jeffrey S. Eisen. [23] It departs from old paradigms of specialization, normative science, linear thought and Newtonian physics to offer techniques of ego deconstruction that allow individuals to mature past their narrow self-interests toward holistic thinking with more effective participation in the new ‘cosmic’ culture.
