10000 Gecs is the upcoming second studio album by American musical duo 100 Gecs. It is expected to be released on March 17, 2023 by Dog Show Records and Atlantic Records.
American music duo 100 gecs released their debut studio album 1000 Gecs on May 31, 2019. Their debut single " Money Machine" and its accompanying music video would cause the group to rise in popularity online, [1] leading the album to be reviewed positively by publications such as The New York Times and Pitchfork. The remix album of 1000 Gecs, entitled 1000 Gecs and the Tree of Clues, was released on July 10, 2020. The album features collaborations with Charli XCX, Kero Kero Bonito, Rico Nasty, Fall Out Boy, Tommy Cash, Hannah Diamond, Black Dresses and Dorian Electra.
In 2020, 100 Gecs signed with Atlantic Records. Dylan Brady told NME that the duo was "trying to be really big—trying to be as big as Ed Sheeran", while Les said that Atlantic was a "good fit... [t]here's so many things that they could help us accomplish". [2] In an interview with Pitchfork, Brady explained "I don’t think I’m ever going to be making a decision to adhere to the Hot 100 situation,” adds Brady. “But it’s cool that, with the normal decisions I make, a song could possibly end up there." [3]
After the release of 1000 Gecs, Laura Les and Dylan Brady continued to create songs in a similar style to the production of that record, sending files for songs back and forth to one another. However, the group found themselves catering to the feedback and commentary they had received for their music. Feeling that the songs weren't strong enough to be released, Brady and Les decided to scrap most of the produced work and start over. [3]
In August of 2021, Steven Horowitz of Pitchfork reported that the album was nearing completion, with most songs being structured and planned. Josh Freese, formerly of Guns N' Roses and Nine Inch Nails will provide studio drum work on the album. Horowitz explained that the album "nudges closer to the mainstream without losing the maniacal, spaghetti-on-the-wall approach that originally positioned them on the sword’s point of outré pop". [3]
In July 2021, 100 gecs announced the 10000 Gecs Tour, with shows in North America set to take place from October to December. [4] On September 6, the album was revealed on social media alongside what was presumed to be the cover art, depicting Les and Brady with their shirts pulled over their faces revealing tattoos on each of their chests. [5] A day later, an interview with Pitchfork's Steven Horowitz, was released explaining the production of the album as well as revealing details about the album's songs. The interview also confirmed the picture released to social media as the tentative cover art for the album. [3] The album will be released via the Dylan Brady-owned record label Dog Show Records. [6] On October 8, the 100 Gecs Twitter account confirmed the album would be releasing in "early 2022". [7] However, after experiencing numerous delays, the album was announced in December 2022 to be released on March 17, 2023. Accompanying the announcement was the release of an EP entitled Snake Eyes. [8]
On November 19, 100 Gecs released the first single off the album, "mememe", with an accompanying music video. [9] On April 12, 2022, 100 Gecs released "Doritos & Fritos" as the second single for the album, along with an accompanying visualizer. [10] A music video for the track was released on May 16, featuring the duo flying around a desert while the news reports on their actions; the video included a fake Danny Devito. [11]
