Introduction:

(Clarification: The Biewer Yorkie, and Yorkshire Terrier are considred two different breeds) The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier ( Biewer Yorkie) is very much like the popular breed the Yorkshire Terrier, except for a color differentiation in the dog's coat. The Biewer Yorkie originated from the breeding of two "original" yorkies by owners Gertrud and Werner Biewer. The couple resided in Germany, and on January 20 1984 a yorkie litter was born. In this litter the first piebald yorkie puppy or Biewer Yorkie came about. The puppy was registered under the name Schneefloeckchen von Friedheck or Snowflake. Both Gertrud and Werner were fascinated with the beautiful pup, and then began a selective breeding process to produce more piebald puppies. The breed was officially recognized in 1989 by the ACH (Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland) and put under the "Toy" group. Biewer yorkies to this day are considered fairly rare and are often used as showdogs. [1]

Basic Description of the Breed:

The Biewer Yorkie has a small or "toy" sized frame which is the primary reason the breed experiences certain health problems. The dog's coat is straight and comes in a variation of black and white, brown and white, and blue and white patterns. The dog's head will be flat with lots of hair, and it's muzzle will be medium in size. This breed is known to carry itself in a confident manner with erect ears and a tail that is carried up. Overall the dog has nice proportions and should come across as neat and compact. [2]

Temperament:

Biewer Yorkies like other small dogs are by nature very energetic, clever, loyal, brave and adventurous. This breed requires a strong authoritative figure who can act as a "pack leader". Without a "pack leader" the dog can become overly aggressive towards other animals and people it is unfamiliar with. Along with this if the dog is socialized from a young age, it can be a wonderful family pet that can cohesively get along with other household animals. However the Biewer Yorkie is recommended to households with older children due to their small size and fragile bone structure.[3] The breed are known to be excellent watchdogs, and can be fairly easily trained. The dogs are quite smart and therefore may be stubborn when it comes to being given boundaries. Overall if this dog has a clear pack leader, and establishes good behavior from an early age they can be wonderful additions to any household.

Health Problems:

The breed does not experience many health complications, however they do have a sensitive stomach and need to be put on a strict regimented diet. Along with this because of the breed's size and frail bone structure they can often have problems regarding their hips such as hip displaysia. Otherwise if bought from a reputable breeder your Biewer Yorkie should live anywhere from 12-15 years.

Grooming:

Grooming for this breed can be fairly simple, but this depends on whether or not as an owner you choose to show your dog. If your Biewer Yorkie is a family pet a bath every two weeks will suffice. However you must remember to brush out their coat at least once a week with a wire comb to avoid painful tangles. If you choose to show your dog, much more effort is put into maintaining a show coat. The dog's coat should be at least floor length and washed along with conditioned once a week. ref>Dog Breed Info, 12 January 2014</ref> The coat will need to be brushed every 2nd day, and misted with Argan oil to keep it soft and silky. Both a wire comb and a bristled brush will be required for a show coat, and the dog will need to be brushed twice daily. The dog's coat will also need to be trimmed weekly, especially the hairs around the ears, as this will keep them erect.

Exercise:

This dog like many other small dogs need at least one daily walk. Playing with your dog will also suffice as exercise and can release a lot of built up tension and frustration. If the dog does not get daily exercise it may begin to display behavioral problems such as being destructive or pacing up and down. Exercise is key when owning a dog of such an energetic nature, and can help for a happier healthier Biewer Yorkie. [4]

Basic Facts:

The Biewer Yorkie is suited for small living spaces such as an apartment but thrive better in homes that have a backyard. If the home has a pool, it needs to be fenced off , because the dog can easily drown if left unsupervised. Height: On average this breed is 8.5 inches or 22cm tall Weight: Average of 7 pounds or 3.1 kgs. * this varies on dog's build
