Rock’n’Roll Football is an afternoon show on broadcast on Absolute Radio and Absolute Radio Extra updates in the United Kingdom during the football season, which provides a mix of music and exclusive coverage of Premier League fixtures.
In August 1998, Chris Evans took a spur of the moment decision one weekend to launch a Saturday afternoon show called Rock 'n' Roll Football, this then lead to Terry Venebles joining Russ Williams in August 1999, at the start of the football season, in a show that would precede Rock’n’Roll Football.
During the 2002 World Cup Rock’n’Roll Football provided unofficial coverage of England’s World Cup Matches. [1]
In August 2010 Rock’n’Roll Football was re-launched with the help of USP Content who assist in the production of the live football coverage. It was at this time as well when the current team was formed with long term Absolute Radio host Russ Williams being joined by Ian Wright and Jim Proudfoot both who left talkSPORT [2].
Between 13:30-15:00 on Absolute Radio Extra Russ Williams provides features, opinions and analysis of the week in football as he prepares for the afternoon's game. Then from 15:00-17:00 on Absolute Radio Russ William hosts “Music and live goals with Russ Williams” while on Absolute Extra Jim Proudfoot and guest provide live and exclusive Barclays Premier League commentary. The afternoon is wrapped up by Ian Wright with “Ian Wright on Absolute Radio” (17:00-19:00) where Ian is joined by Jim, Russ and guests for post-match opinions and analysis.
The current team is made up of Russ Williams, Jim Proudfoot and Ian Wright, who are joined weekly by other commentators and pundits including Tony Dorigo, Matt Holland, Stewart Robson and Craig Burley.
During “Ian Wright on Absolute Radio” it is common for a celebrity to join Wright for a interview encapsulating everything from the celebrities sporting interests to their current activities. Such guests include Noel Gallagher, Piers Morgan, Harry Redknapp, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Gareth Bale, Jack Wilshere and Joey Barton.
