Grand Master Nam Souk Kim

Grand Master Nam Souk Kim is our school’s founding father. He holds the rank of 9th degree black belt and sits on the council for the Kukkiwon and the World Taekwondo Federation, headquartered in Seoul, Korea. He is among the original members of the Chung Do Kwan, founded in 1944. Grandmaster Kim resides and teaches in California, but visits our school to provide instruction and conduct black belt promotion testings.

Grandmaster Kim served in the Korean army from 1957 to 1959. He graduated from Sung Kyun University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, and went to work for the South Korean government as a research analyst.

Assigned to Uganda in 1969, Grandmaster Kim served as Professor of Physical Fitness at Uganda Prisons Staff College, was promoted to Senior Superintendent of Prisons by the Ugandan government and held responsibility for self-defense training for all Ugandan prison officials and security forces.

In 1984 Grandmaster Kim was appointed as liaison and representative of the World Taekwondo Federation and Ugandan government. He was charged with and conducted a national campaign for Taekwondo recognition in Uganda into 1988.

From 1985–1988 Grandmaster Kim was Taekwondo Instructor for the U.S. and Great Britain Embassy Officials in Kampla, Uganda. He trained security forces (US Marines and Royal Military Police), including officers, and was responsible for protection of US and British Embassies in Uganda.

In 1988 Grandmaster Kim was appointed Attaché of Uganda Olympic Committee for the XXIX Olympic games in Seoul, Korea. He acted as liaison for communications between Korean officials and team and managed all aspects of accommodation.

Grandmaster Kim moved to the United States in 1988 and earned his U.S. citizenship in 1997. Grandmaster Kim was promoted to 9th dan by the Kukkiwon in 1990, the highest rank attainable. He established Grandmaster Kim’s Taekwondo in 1991 in Olathe, Kansas.
