Renewable energy lawyers focus their practice on serving the legal needs of renewable energy project developers and companies that develop clean technologies (see clean tech law). Lawyers are typically apart of a firm with a wide range of services and clients that range from energy suppliers, landowners, independent generator and distribution companies to investors, equipment manufacturers, and government entities to name a few. Top renewable energy law firms such as Latham & Watkins LLP (headed by Jeffrey GreenBerg) work to create financing transactions that allow them to leverage strong connections with leading commercial banks. Other lawyers such as Eli Katz works to make sure tax subsidies are maximized to the fullest extent possible. [1] Another firm, Barnes & ThornBurg, consists of many lawyers and their services mainly focus on but are not limited to Mergers and acquisitions, Energy supply, Enterprise and venture structuring, and equipment procurement. [2] The use for lawyers in this field is important for those that want to shift the world off of its dependence on oil and other natural fuels. They can also resolve conflicts between environmentalists and renewable energy projects that usually dispute over matters that include where to build a new power plant without negatively impacting the environment.
