Nigel Botterill

Nigel Botterill (born January 1966) is a British entrepreneur, marketer, author, speaker and mentor. He is founder and chief executive of N5 Ltd, home to a number of businesses including award winning franchise business, thebestof and Botterill's own private Entrepreneur's Circle.

In February 2011, Botterill published his first business book The Botty Rules which shot to number two in the Sunday Telegraph best-sellers list. Botterill donated all the proceeds from the book to The Teenage Cancer Trust. The second edition, named Botty's Rules was published by Randomhouse in August 2011.

Life and Career

Botterill grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire and left school at the age of 16 to begin a career with Barclays Bank which lasted for 18 years [1]. In his final role at Barclays he was responsible for the sales of all UK call centres: 6 call centres, 3000 staff.

In 2000 Botterill began the role of Marketing Director at Singlepoint (part of the Phones4U empire) working alongside John Caudwell. He began working with another entrepreneur, Hamish Ogston in late 2001 as Managing Director of Card Protection Plan. Botterill took the business’s turnover soaring from £3m to £35m in less than two years.

In 2003 it was time for Botterill to venture out on his own. Working with Caudwell and Ogston had ignited his already burning desire for success and he chose to take a leap and do it all by himself. Later that year, he set up his own marketing consultancy, N5 Ltd, which caused him to remortgage his house, wave goodbye to a large salary and set up an office at home.

At the time Botterill was launching N5 Ltd, his wife Sue decided to take matters into her own hands to boost the flailing family budget. She set up a local community magazine with paid-for ads from local businesses and was soon generating a sizeable income each month whilst looking after the couple’s children.

Its unprecedented success lead to Botterill firing all his consultancy clients and shifting his focus on to a new business called MyMag, a programme teaching people to set up, publish, market and administer their own local community magazine.

In 2005, with the growing success of MyMag, Botterill set up thebestof which was the very first online business directory and became the fastest UK franchise ever to get to 200 franchisees. In 2007 thebestof was rebranded to become the complete marketing solution for the best local businesses. This transition was recognised by the award for Innovative Company of the Year which was awarded to Botterill at the Fast Growth Business Awards in 2008. thebestof also ranked No. 3 in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100 in 2007 and won the award for Best e-company of the Year at the Sharp Edge Awards presented by Duncan Bannatyne.

After winning awards and seeing thebestof thrive, there was no time to sit back and enjoy for Botterill. He set up another new business under the N5 umbrella, called My Little Wrapper which launched in 2008. This was set up as a mini-business programme which taught the buyer how to produce, market and sell beautiful hand-wrapped personalised chocolate bars which would be perfect for the special-occasions market.

In 2010, Botterill set up his own private Entrepreneur’s Circle to help small to medium sized businesses in the UK grow by providing mentoring, coaching and support. 1300 business owners became members in the first year and the Circle recently featured in a Daily Telegraph Business Club video [2] where Botterill explained the power of working on your business rather than in it.

In 2011 Nigel Botterill introduced a new business to the UK market. Peel 2 Save is a fundraising card which offers free advertising to local businesses and donates 50% of all profits to charity. Once again Botterill set up over 450 people in business and his overall aim is to raise £2.5million for good causes in the first twelve months of Peel 2 Save trading.

Awards

In addition to the awards his business’ have won, Botterill has also picked up several accolades for his contributions to the business world. He won the BT Essence of the Entrepreneur Award [3] and was also ‘Highly Commended’ at the National Business Awards in the Entrepreneur of the Year category. Botterill was also the first ever non-American (and two time winner) to pick up the GKIC Marketer of the Year award.
