RE: Searching and Anchors
Hi Redwolf24,
Thanks for the welcome. I actually joined Wikipedia a while back but hadn't logged in when I posted material. I wasn't sure why one even needed to log in, but now see that it allows users to follow the history somewhat more precisely.
My current question is how one can search ALL of Wikipedia for a specific name, term, phrase to find out what's available.
For example, if I wanted to search for Warren Burger, fomer Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, I'd probably find an individual listing for him. However, there might be no main entry for a person even though that person might be mentioned numerous times in articles about other things. And even if there is an entry for what you're looking for, there's no way to find all those other mentions unless links have already been established. Is there a way to do what I'm asking that I don't see?
I'm also wondering how to get the same effect as the HTML anchor code <a name="example"> which allows a user to jump directly to a specific spot on a page? Your command <div id="example">an id attribute</div> inserts a hard return <br> when one inserts it in the middle of text, forcing one to use it at the beginning or end of a paragraph.

BTW, could you look at the pages Gormenghast and Gormenghast (novel)? I've been working on it. However, the trouble is, it's about a series of books known as the Gormenghast Series. But the second book is also called Gormenghast. Uberisaac
Thanks for the message table. Its delicous. Uberisaac
Another question (you've been helpful): Am I allowed to upload any images I find on Google to articles? I have been doing so, but I'm not sure about copyright. Uberisaac
Haha the whole image copyright thing drives me INSANE! Anywho look at this very talk page under Fair Use and use those tags on your images. If you're not sure about any of those just type {{ fairuse}}. Redwolf24 09:44, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
WHOA! Hold on now. (I tried Red, I swear I did, but I just can't help myself!) If you aren't sure of the copyright status of an image, the best thing to do is to not upload it. Wikipedia can get into serious trouble if we violate copyrights. Fair use is an option, but only for certain types of copyrights, and if you're unsure, go to Wikipedia:Fair use and ask first. For the full image policy, see Wikipedia:Image use policy. -- Essjay · Talk 09:50, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
Pfffft. I'm not sure how Wikipedia could be sued for it considering its open content. All they'd do is get rid of the image. One thing I don't get is... it takes time and money to copyright stuff and the fact is, if National Geographic prints a picture of a Lemming, it doesnt mean they copyrighted it... Viva La Fair Use. Redwolf24 09:57, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
But it doesn't take time or money to copyright; it takes time and money to register a copyright. Under US law, every original creation is automatically copyrighted to the creator, and there is no requirement that the creator do anything to register or otherwise protect the copyright. If you choose to register your copyrights, then you get additional protection (including stautory damages) but you still are able to protect your copyright and sue for actual damages without registration.
I know because I'm a co-owner in a publishing company (I put up the cash, my partner does the work) and we just met with our attorney about this not a month ago. -- Essjay · Talk 10:02, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
I hunted you down a primer on it: Copyright Basics from the U.S. Copyright Office -- Essjay · Talk 10:06, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
It would be different if National Geographic actually put the pictures on Wikipedia. They would have to click the disclaimer box, and that would release their copyright. However, if you take someoneelse's pictures and upload them, they haven't released thier copyright. Sure, it's not likely they will sue (or even find out, for that matter) but there is still the chance, so it's always best to be very sure of the status of any copyrighted images.
Whatever photographer took the image for NG automatically received a copyright; he either released the copyright to NG or licensed the image. When you took it and uploaded it, you infringed on the copyright (unless they released thier images, which is highly unlikely.) In the unlikely event that they decide to sue (and who knows, maybe thier owned by Britannica, and are just looking for a reason to sue) they could do us some damage. That would anger Almighty Jimbo, and we'd all end up in WikiHell. All I'm saying is, be careful, and caveat uploader. -- Essjay · Talk 10:17, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for asking - it was (is) a combination of Wiki- and non-Wikistress. I was (am) stressed at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/William M. Connolley - it really bothers me that someone who I see as working really hard for the integrity of Wikipedia is being voted down because of the actions which were very much for the benefit of the project...in some cases by the disruptive users who are trying to insert POV material into Wikipedia, and in other cases because of an ArbComm decisions which I think was a totally inappropriate decision (since William was given revert parole in the absence of findings of fact against him by the ArbComm). Couple that with dealing with troublesome users and I was pretty much on edge when a bomb when off in my home country...terrorism is nothing but news until it hits a spot you know - my father walked past the place the bomb went off in what appears to be the interval between when it was placed there and when it went off. On the grand scheme of things it was small, but it was finally real. So after that I found myself losing it at a person who was an annoying editor, and I decided that I was too stressed to edit Wikipedia. So I took a day or two off...of course "time off" is probably more effective if yoiu stop watching your watchlist, but promising myself not to edit really put things into perspective. Things are far less stressful if you can't hit the [edit this page] tab :) Anyway, thanks very much for asking. Guettarda 13:39, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for the welcome message. I do have a question. What is the difference between the page "User Talk: Neutron" where your message appeared, and the page "User: Neutron" for which there is no actual page? In other words when I log in, and click on my user name at the top of the screen, I get a page that says there is no page named "User: Neutron," but if I click on my talk, I get the page with your message. What is the diffrence?
Thanks for your help.

I saw some of the links (I have several of those people on my watchlist); thank you for that too. And I'm honored to hear you say I'm you WBF. I agree that all we can do is pray, so:
Almighty and Ever-Editing Jimbo, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise...From age to age, you call your editors together, so that from East to West, a perfect Wikipedia may be created to your glory...Lord Jimbo, you said to your editors: I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on my WikiSins, but on the good faith of my edits, and grant my RfA the peace and unity of your Wikipedia where you live for ever and ever...Deliver us, Jimbo, from every edit conflict, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy, keep us free from POV, and protect us from needless anxiety...All this we ask in the name of the one Wiki, which is with you and with us, NPOV, forever and ever. Amen"
God I have too much information in my head, and too much time on my hands. (Every line in that is a paraphrase of the Mass.) -- Essjay · Talk 13:52, July 13, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, but I was busy. I didn't vote at the very beggining. But now I voted for you essjay. Exir Kamalabadi (Talk) (contribs) 02:31, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
For the future, try putting {{album}} on the talk page of the albums, so I won't have to to do them all. -- Mike Garcia | talk 02:09, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Three more to go! -- Essjay · Talk 04:15, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I just can't figure out how to "sign my talk page." I made some minor contributions, but I don't have any idea where to go to put my signature! Since I was logged in, is it automatic? Thanks!
