Introduction

A radio net, or simply net, is essentially a moderated conference call conducted over two-way radio, typically in half-duplex operating conditions. The use of half-duplex operation requires a very particular set of operating procedures to be followed in order to avoid inefficiencies and chaos.

Radio nets can be conducted on a regular schedule, or only when the need arises; they may be conducted on a particular recurring channel or frequency, or may be conducted on whatever frequency is available.

The two most consistently defined procedures for conducting radio nets are found in the U.S. military's various radiotelephony operating procedures, and in the American Radio Relay League's National Traffic System procedures.
