A short film made by the film students of Darmstadt university of Applied sciences about a Sinhalese, non-German speaking student from Sri Lanka, who is studying in Germany. Chamath, the main protagonist, battles an accident in his student dorm that temporarily blinds him. This unveils the extraordinary challenges of overcoming linguistic barriers in situations, when vital help is urgently needed- in Chamath's case it's during the emergency call. [1]

"19:53 - Lost in Laguage:" is a short film that everyone who ever experienced a (permanent) stay in a foreign country, may relate to. Chamath's hurdles trying to call an ambulance, while not speaking German yet, is a parallel to what many people can feel, when not being able to express themselves, neither being capable of understanding the counterpart. Especially when you think everyone in Germany speaks English, which is not the case, even in emergencies.
But it is not only a short film about language barriers- it also serves as a powerful reminder of the monumental significance of language rights and the devastating consequences of linguistic discrimination. Subliminally, it mirrors historical struggles, echoing the impact of the 1953 Sinhala-only Act on Tamil speakers. Directed by Gulya Amatova, conceptualised and written by Pathurjan Wijeyasekara both are film students from Darmstadt university of Applied sciences, and the rest of the crew is also from Darmstadt university of Applied sciences except the casts, since the cast has to be a Sinhala speaking actor. [3]
Funding
This project is partialy funded by the Darmstadt university of Applied sciences and the team is raising crowdfunding for the film. [4]
