UOIT Ridgeback's Varsity Men's Soccer

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology [1] varsity soccer program is a university athletic program that competes in the OUA [2] league. The team is based out of Oshawa, Ontario and plays their home games on campus at Vaso's field. The ridgeback soccer program joined the OUA league in 2005 and has since gained recognition and interest with future attending athletes and students alike. The team's coach Vaso Vujanovic was the former coach of rivals Durham College [3] (Durham Lord's) and was asked to join the team when they first started out. The UOIT Ridgebacks and the Durham Lords share a campus and square off in the Campus cup once a year. The campus cup is an orientation week event with the goal of bringing the two sets of students together and promote school spirit. The Durham Lords have the upper hand in the event winning it three out of the last four years.

Early Years

Since the 2005 inaugural season, the UOIT Ridgebacks have had a difficult time establishing a presence within the OUA league. The team finished in the bottom three in the league in it's first eight season's competing against much more established athletic programs. Only recently, in the 2014-2015 season did the team have something to cheer about, making the Playoffs for the first time in school history. The team placed fifth place in the eastern conference (all time highest finish) and went on to defeat the Carlton University Raven's in the first round, before losing to the Ryerson University Ram's in the second. Ryerson went on to place second that season behind only the York University Lion's.

New found expectations

The UOIT Varsity Soccer program is ever evolving and with the playoff run of the 2014-15 season look to solidify their spot as a playoff OUA team every year.

Vaso's field

Named after the current coach of the Ridgeback's and former coach of the Durham Lords, the field is located on campus and shared by both the Ridgeback's and the Lord's. Plans to replace the grass with Artificial turf are in motion and are set to be finalised in the coming years.

Vaso Vujanovic

Born in Yugoslavia, Vaso started coaching the Lord's in a career extending from 1973-1989. He coached the Lord's to a 128-35-7 record in that time. Coach Vaso lead the Lord's to two OCAA [4] championships in both 1980 and later in 1988, as well as five time runners up, five third place finishes and two national championship appearences ( CCAA) [5]

Vaso was inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame in 1997
