"Golf by the Way" (Stylised as Golf BTW) is a fast-paced real-time mini-golf party game with cute visuals, developed by the "PieSevenGun" studio. The game introduces a concept where the player can play golf, hit their friends' golf balls, and even hit their friends. [1] The game is planned for release in 2024, on Steam and the Nintendo Switch platform. "Golf by the Way" offers keyboard controls and controller systems. The maximum number of players for casual mode is four. [2] The gameplay objective is to get the golf ball past the rivals and hazards on the map. The players can hit their rivals and their golf balls to interrupt them.

Gameplay

The objective of “Golf by the Way” is to swing a golf ball according to each player’s color towards the golf hole through obstacles in various maps and interrupt other players from reaching the goal before they achieve the highest score at the end.

In “Golf by the Way”, the players control a character that they can walk and run around the map with a golf club that they can charge to swing and hit the ball, landing it in a position that gives the players an advantage over their opponents. Along the way, they can also swing their golf club into other players’ golf balls, slowing them down and reducing their advantage. Additionally, the players can directly hit other players, making it even more challenging for them to hit their golf ball. [1]

In “Golf by the Way”, there are currently two modes available:

The first mode is the Casual mode, where the objective is to swing the player’s golf ball into the golf hole through obstacles on the terrain to achieve victory and interrupt other players from achieving the same goal. The second mode is called the Hockey mode. In this mode, the players are separated into two teams and swing their hockey puck into the opponent's hockey goal to gain points over opponents and achieve victory with a higher score at the end of the game when the time is set. [2]

In casual mode, the game provides an option for the players to choose how long they want to play. Casual mode has 3, 6, 9, and 12 rounds to choose from. In each game, if the players can’t end the round in 2.30 minutes, the round will be forced to end. [1] [2]

Development

Game concept and inspiration

The initial concept of the game began with the idea, "What if we create a mini-golf game that allows players to interact with rivals and the environment?" This idea was proposed by the team's game designer. The game was inspired by " Madagascar: Tiki Minigolf," a game that challenges players with obstacles. The team agreed to develop a golf game that offers players more interactivity, rather than just hitting the golf ball into the hole. Initially, the director wanted to find a company that provides juniors with work opportunities in the game industry. He gathered his team members and founded Golf by The Way, their first game, with support from Quantum Peaks Studio since 2020. [4]

The in-game view is set to be a top-down view to allow players to inspect the whole map and plan the route for the golf ball. Currently, Golf by The Way has three maps for players to enjoy: The Cove, The Cemetery, and The Candy. [1] Each map has its unique inspiration behind it.

Map

The inspiration for in-game maps comes from the idea "Hit everywhere, Hit everything", which means the team had to design how the player interacts with objects on each map. Consequently, the director gathered ideas from his teammates about where they thought it would be extraordinary to play golf, aiming to give the players an interesting and fun aesthetic. [4]

The cove was developed first, driven by the team's passion. Assembling the pirate theme, they considered how fun it could be to have that atmosphere in the game. [4] They designed pirate boats in the scene, so players need to avoid hitting the golf ball into the water or they will sink to the bottom of the sea and must start from the beginning again. Other challenges and interactive objects the developers placed within the cove include a turtle, which the players will slip on if they step on it, and coconuts that the other players gather and intentionally hit to you. Another feature is the cannon on the map, which players can use to reach the goal faster.

The second map is the cemetery. This map's idea emerged when the team discussed how chaotic it could be if people played golf in a cemetery, disturbing the dead. [4]The angry ghosts will try to hit you on this map. There is also a spider web that the player can hit to summon a spider to create a bridge to cross a toxic stream. The featured tool provided to the player is a magic pot, which teleports the player to another pot on the other side.

The last map is Candyland. Its concept starts with a simple idea, "Who doesn't like candy?" said one of the team members. Initially, this map was designed to have a cute aesthetic of sweets and candy. Later, the developers added a Christmas theme to it. So, the decorations relate to Christmas and winter. [4]More gimmicks were added to the map such as a gingerbread house, a single gingerbread that can be broken by the player, and ice cream that the player can use to freeze their rivals, and then reaching the goal faster through that interruption.

Each map provides features to enhance the game's fun and interest. For example, in the cove, the map includes cannons to launch players and golf balls across the terrain. These utilities can assist players in traversing the map or disrupting their rivals.

Cosmetics

The game aims to have its players enjoy its fun atmosphere, so it provides cosmetics to unlock by completing achievements. Each player can also customize the skin they like to display in-game. The character is designed to be round and short. The hat is designed to be big and chunky, to align with the game’s aesthetic. The golf club cosmetic is also designed to have a fun look, such as BBQ, boba tea, guitar, etc. [1] [5]
