Carl Van (October 19, 1959) born Carl van Lamsweerde, is an American speaker, consultant author, and the president and CEO of International Insurance Institute. He has written several books for the Claims Insurance Industry and has had many articles published on customer service and management and employee motivation. [1]

Biography

Carl Van, ITP (Insurance Training Professional), is President & CEO of International Insurance Institute, Inc. [2] He graduated from California State University, Sacramento where he received his Bachelor's degree in Insurance. He has been in the insurance claims industry since 1980 and has held the positions of Claims Adjuster, Claims Supervisor, Claims Manager, Division Claims Manager and Regional Manager over Claims, Loss Control and Premium Audit. [2]

Mr. Van has been an instructor for the Insurance Educational Association, teaching claims concepts, AIC, INS and IEA courses. He has set up five in-house claims training programs for various insurance companies throughout the nation, and has written articles for Claims Magazine, Claims People Magazine, National Underwriter, California Insurance Journal and over 75 other national and international publications.

Mr. Van has been a keynote speaker at claims conferences around the country, a trainer at an international U.S-Japanese executive training program, a guest speaker at hundreds of claims association seminars, and selected as the opening presenter at some of the most prestigious claims conferences in the nation, including the Claims Magazine ACE national conference.

Mr. Van is the Dean of the School of Claims Performance, and has service as both board member and Regional Vice President of the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators.

He is owner and publisher of Claims Education Magazine, and board president of the Claims Education Conference.

Mr. Van is creator, presenter and producer of all claims training videos at Claims Education On Line, which include Time Management, Customer Service, Negotiations and Critical Thinking, all specific to claims professionals.

He is owner and publisher of Claims Professional Books On Line, and is the author of the highly acclaimed book The 8 Characteristics of the Awesome Adjuster, which has sold internationally throughout the United States, Canada, Guam, Singapore, France, Australia, England, Chile, Ireland, and 25 other countries. Other trade books by Carl Van include Gaining Cooperation, Gaining Cooperation for the Workers’ Comp. Professional and The Claims Cookbook. Books for the general business audience include two internationally released books, Attitude, Ability and the 80/20 Rule and The Eight Characteristics of the Awesome Employee.

Mr. Van writes all materials for his Carl Van Claims Expert blog, and provides claims tips on his Carl Van Professional Speaker You Tube channel.

Other credits include being an arbitrator, a licensed agent, a TASA certified expert witness for insurance Bad Faith suits, as well as a national auditor for a federal regulatory agency. [2]

Early life

Carl Van was born Carl Christian Gregory Maria Baron van Lamsweerde. He was the second son of a prominent Dutch noble and artist, Franciscus Ludovicus Aloysius Maria Baron van Lamsweerde. After the death of Carl’s father due to cancer at the age of 11, his mother, Joyce, married John E. Martin. Mr. Martin was a successful business owner and investor. Mr. Martin had tremendous influence over Carl, recapping stories of coming to America with virtually nothing and building a successful business. Carl admired his new father greatly, and marveled at his generosity. Carl had a remarkable resemblance to his father Franz, and was greatly influenced by John. His mother would often comment, “I look at Carl and I see Franz. Then he starts to talk, and out comes John”. [3]
Carl is the youngest of three children. His brother, Alexander Franciscus Stanley Maria Baron van Lamsweerde was born October 3, 1956, and his sister, Lhana Sharon Maria Jonette Barones van Lamsweerde, was born June 26, 1955. [4]

Education and Designations

Carl graduated from Birmingham High School in 1977 [5] , and immediately began working full time, taking years of college night classes. Carl graduated from California State University, Sacramento with his B.S. degree in Insurance. [6] By the time he earned his degree, Carl was already a Regional Claims Manager, and even writing and teaching several insurance courses. Carl also earned his ITP (Insurance Training Professional) designation which recognizes individual excellence and professionalism in training and education in the insurance industry. [2]

Marriage and children

With his first marriage, came his daughter Amanda Elaine Denise Baroness van Lamsweerde, born July 20, 1984, who Carl continuously proclaims is a child genius. [1] Carl married Ann Elizabeth Wimsatt, on July 16, 1994, and together they have lived in Sacramento, CA, Nashville, TN, and now reside in New Orleans, LA. [1]He is also the proud step-father of Ann's twin daughters, Molly and Layne. [1]
