As with eating any foraged food, eating any of the plants from the list above presents risks. The two main risks are through Poisoning and Contamination.

Poisoning

Several plants can be deadly in small doses. Three plants [75] in Tasmania to be particularly careful of are

Contamination

Some contamination risks are [76]

  • Plants could be growing in a location where chemicals were dumped or used
  • Plants along roadsides can have vehicle exhaust fumes settle on them
  • Plants from a florist will likely have pesticide sprays on them
  • Plants could have been urinated or deficated on or near by dogs or other animals
  • Plants in gardens could be sprayed by gardeners (roses against aphids, etc)

Contamination

  • Plants could be growing in a location where chemicals were dumped or used
  • Plants along roadsides can have vehicle exhaust fumes settle on them
  • Plants from a florist will likely have pesticide sprays on them
  • Plants could have been urinated or deficated on or near by dogs or other animals
  • Plants in gardens could be sprayed by gardeners (roses against aphids, etc)
