Which article are you evaluating?

Airbnb

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

Initially, I chose to evaluate Airbnb due to it's significant growth and it's revolutionary approach to the lodging industry. The company itself has essentially created it's own marketplace, consisting of hundreds of thousands of listings globally. This marketplace, representative of the sharing economy, will provide me with an especially unique sustainability evaluation process. With Airbnb's platform focused on enabling individuals to rent out their homes, concerns and inquiries arise around the environmental effects of things such as energy usage and their influence on increased travel patterns. Additionally, issues such as corporate operations sustainability practices and the operation of large data storage and gathering locations will provide me with a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of one of the world's largest and fastest-growing corporations. I believe that this company essentially doesn't offer any particular product or doesn't indulge in any sort of manufacturing; it has sort of flown under the radar in terms of sustainability practice scrutiny, and for that reason I am excited to uncover some of these issues.

Evaluate the article

Beginning with the lead section, Airbnb's Wikipedia page explicitly defines the topics of discussion, effectively offering a detailed and concise overview that captures the reader's interests. The first sentences on the page describe details essential to Airbnb's operations, such as the headquarters and inception location, as well as the company's industry and service, which is to provide lodging and experience solutions to travelers. The following paragraphs delve into topics such as company history, their operations or business model, and controversies such as legal filings. Within the lead, there does not appear to be any secondary information, so it does an effective job of serving it's purpose as providing a well-rounded introduction to the company from a wide scope.

Content: The entirety of Airbnb's Wiki page provides comprehensive information on aspects such as operational foundation, company growth, global impact, criticisms, and regulatory difficulties. However, pertaining to this project, the page does not offer a sustainability section as most companies have or should have. This is certainly an area for improvement considering the tremendous growth and steps that the climate or sustainability movement has taken. In terms of equity gaps, some of the pertaining information is discussed in their controversies and criticisms section, which includes anti-discrimination policies and issues relating to historically underrepresented populations. The addition of an environmental impact or sustainability topic would greatly improve the article's inclusion of relevant issues and topics.

Tone & Balance: The article seems quite neutral, as it discusses both the company's successes as well as it's issues and controversies, doing so without any leaning bias. Claims that are made are consistently supported by reliable sources, including the company's 10-K report and legal documents, and multiple viewpoints are included on topics such as the aforementioned regulatory and compliance challenges and criticisms from the company's stakeholders. Legal settlements or disputes mentioned under the criticisms and controversies topic are broadened to avoid bias, and it does not seem the article has any intentions of persuading readers in any one direction.

Sources: The article relies on a multitude of sources, which include news coverage, company-disclosed reports, industry analyses, and peer-reviewed publications, all of which are reliable in the context of Wikipedia's guidelines. A number of facts, particularly those revolving around the company's early-stage funding, development, and growth, are backed by academic or peer-reviewed sources. All sources seem to be current, mostly between 2017 and 2022. The diversity of authors, contributors, and perspectives cannot specifically be assessed. After examining a number of links present on the website, it is apparent that the links are successful, relevant, and accurate.

Organization & Quality: The article is overall very well written, apprehensive, and concise. It seems to be free of grammatical and spelling errors. The entirety of the page is efficiently organized into a wide variety of insightful topics that cover all the main aspects of the business. This thorough organization allows article viewers to seamlessly navigate through topics and key points.

Media & Images: The images within the article are rather basic, offering images of things such as the company logo and headquarters. The images, given how basic they are, provide relevant and accurate captions and context. The layout of the images is proper, as they are positioned relative to the article sections that they are relevant to. There are no additional pieces of media.

Talk Page: Topics of discussion on the articles the talk page covers issues ranging from clarification on the development of the company's name to how regulatory changes are represented in the article. A couple of comments also discuss issues of repetitiveness, which, upon review, seem appropriate. The majority of issues discussed on the talk page seem to mostly pertain to small issues or inconsistencies, such as the need for more information on basic terminology such as "B n' B," or the need for further information on the regulations affecting Airbnb's operations.

Overall: Overall, the article is well developed and provides adequate information on the company and it's operations. It's well organized and assembled within different sectors and topics. The largest issue with the article is its lack of information surrounding sustainability efforts and impacts, which are becoming increasingly important to mention.
