Andrea Pignataro (born 1970 in Bologna) is an Italian-British entrepreneur, billionaire resident in Saint Moritz, former trader at Salomon Brothers, founder and CEO of ION group, a privately held global financial software and data firm based in Dublin, Ireland. According to Forbes, in 2024 Pignataro is the second wealthiest individual in Italy with total asset of 27,5 billion dollars. The Italian press has dubbed him as "the Italian Michael Bloomberg"

Biography and education

Born in Bologna in 1970, after graduated from University of Bologna in economics , he went on and obtained a Ph.D in mathematics from Imperial College London

Career

Pignataro started his career as a trader at Salomon Brothers in 1994 before it was merged with Citi group in the late 1990s. In 1997 he founded ION Investment Group in London as a joint venture between Salomon Brothers and List - a software company based in Pisa which specialized in trade Greek and Italian government bonds, List had also been acquired by Ion in 2020.

In 2004 Pignataro sold 30% stakes of the firm to TA Associates, its price fell by 20% in 2011 and further on to 7% in 2017 with Carlyle Group as a replacement for TA Associates. Ion later repurchased these Carlyle's stake in 2020.

He became publicly known in the press for invested over 3 billion euros to acquire Cedacri and Cerved both are IT companies that offer data collection services for banks, businesses and the public sector. Pignataro later invested 1,35 billion euros to gain control over Prelios (formerly Pirelli Real Estate) later acquiring the company in July 2024.

Pignataro has bought approximately 10 companies over the years and some of them are outside of finance sector including the sportwear brand Macron, a main sponsor of the Italian soccer team Lazio. His other investments include 9,4% of Illimity Bank for 90 million euros , 32% of the saving bank CR Volterra for 15 million euros

Personal life

He has always kept a low profile, a sailing enthusiast and the owner of a luxury collection of villas and hotels on the island of Canouan in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
