At 2 weeks post-hatch, Gulf killifish show reduced growth and survival in freshwater, but by 7 weeks old juvenile killifish have developed hypo-osmotic tolerance [1]. At 7 weeks old juvenile killifish can live in freshwater ponds or tanks without reducing their growth rate [1]. Gulf killifish develop an early ability to osmoregulate because they are born with functional gills and mature mouthparts [1].
