Philip P. Bolton (born November 5, 1945) is the founder of Global Atlanta, the city's media outlet dedicated to "locally international" news on global activities and the convener for Georgia's diplomatic community.

Life and Career

Bolton was born in Miami, Florida, and spent his childhood between Cleveland, Ohio and Paris, France before attending boarding school at Milton Academy in Massachusetts. As the middle child of five, Phil is the grandson to Frances P. Bolton and Chester Castle Bolton and son to Kenyon Castle Bolton II [1] and Mary Peters Bolton [2].

After graduating from Williams College in 1967, Bolton joined the Peace Corps to teach English in rural Kenya. This exchange with Kenyans underscored Bolton’s interest in building bridges between people from different countries through storytelling and journalism. After the Peace Corps, Bolton attended the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. and Bologna, Italy.

When offered an opportunity to work for the Macon Telegraph in 1973, Bolton embarked on a new endeavor as a reporter in Macon, Georgia [3]. During his time with the Macon Telegraph, Bolton covered the police beat and court systems. This work led to his role as Bureau Chief in Milledgeville, Georgia during which he wrote on union efforts to organize textile and aerospace plants as well as on issues related to Central State Hospital, the state’s historic mental health facility. In 1981, Bolton moved to Atlanta, Georgia for a job with the publishing arm of the Lafferty Group, an international provider of financial information. It was Lafferty Group that sent Bolton to France as a correspondent in Paris.

Upon his return to Atlanta in 1990, Bolton took an entrepreneurial shift by establishing Agio Press and producing a bi-monthly newsletter on international business. He saw globalization taking place in his own backyard even before the 1996 Olympics and 1996 Paralympics brought Atlanta to the world’s attention [4]. This realization further compelled Bolton to cover international business from a local perspective through GlobalFax News Service, which later evolved into Global Atlanta. Over the years, Global Atlanta became recognized as a convener of the diplomatic community and multimedia coverage of Atlanta’s rise as a center for international business, education, and culture [5] [6]. In 2019, Bolton officially retired from Global Atlanta yet remains involved through international coverage and archiving projects. Trevor Williams, Global Atlanta’s Managing Editor and author since 2007, leads the firm today.

Personal Life

He and his wife Vicki N. Bolton reside in Atlanta, Georgia and have two grown children, one of whom is in Washington, D.C. and one of whom is in Burlington, Vermont. Bolton is on the board of the Theatre du Reve [7] and remains involved in Atlanta’s international arts scene. Bolton enjoys tennis, domestic and international travel, and service as an usher for The Church of the Epiphany in Decatur, Georgia.
