Van Gelderen (born September 1958) is a Dutch Linguist, Syntactician, academic and author.

Van Gelderen was born in Geertruidenberg, The Netherlands, on September 20, 1958 to her mother,Elsje (Schuttevaar) Gelderen and father, Antonij Johannes Gelderen. ^[2] Elly grew up in Geertruidenberg.She currently lives in Arizona.Van Gelderen married her late husband, Harry McFarland Bracken on June 19, 1985, who was an American philosopher, a specialist in Descartes and friend of Noam Chomsky. ^[2]

Van Gelderen studied for a BA ( Bachelor of Arts) degree at Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 1979, where she then continued onto a MA ( Master of Arts) degree in 1981. ^[3] She then completed a Doctorate in Philosophy in 1986 at McGill University, Canada, after moving to Canada. ^[4] Van Geldren commenced her teaching career whilst being a teaching assistant in Linguistics at McGill University from 1981 to 1985. ^[3] From Janurary 1986-June 1986 and January- June 1990 Van Gelderen was an Instructor at John Abbott College, Humanities Department in St Anne de Bellevue, Québec, Canada in courses on Human and Civil rights. ^[3] In janurary 1989 to June 1989 she fulfilled the role of "Faculty Lecturer" at McGill Unviversity Department of Linguistics in Montréal, Canada, where she specialised in Syntax. ^[3] From September 1989 to June 1990 Van Gelderen was a "Visiting Assistant Professor" at Queens University, Department of English in Ontario, Canada in courses on Linguistics and Syntax, and has since performed as a "Universitair docent" at the University of Groningen (September 1990- August 1995). ^[3] Elly Van Gelderen has been a Professor, member of the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University since 1995. ^[1] When Van Gelderen joined ASU in 1995, she started a Syntax reading group which reads cutting-edge articles in the area and pre-publications. ^[5] It has been active since 1995 with faculty and students from various departments/schools. ^[5]Van Gelderen many areas of enterprise towards students consists of being a chair for students in formal Syntax, English Historical Linguistics, Arabic syntax, and Applied Linguistics, whilst also being a mentor in Philosophy and has since considered investigating first Child Language Acquisition and the Philosophy of language. ^[5] Van Gelderen has since organised workshops at Arizona State University such as, "Cycles I" in 2008", "Parameters and Typology" in 2009, "Cycles II" in 2014", and has partaken in many conferences such as: "WECOL" and "WCCFL" in 2013, and the " Arabic Linguistics Symposium" in 2018. ^[3] In addition to Arabic,Van Gelderen has encouraged research in many languages since 1995, and has conducted reading courses in Dutch, Yiddish and Swedish, as well as speaking French, German, some Swedish, Norwegian,some Urdo and Spanish, and minimal Navajo. ^{[5] [3]}

As well as a Linguist, van Gelderen is also a thriving Artist, specializing in Pastel, Watercolor, Acrylic, and Oil mediums. She has published many pieces of Art Work that paint human faces, such as: "Four Boys I" an "II", "Rosie I", "Happy Man", "Rocky", "Man with Beard", "Blue Man", "Harry II" and "Harry III", which are all [Pastel] on Paper designs. ^[1] Van Gelderen has also published many Water Colour on paper designs, such as: "Three Faces", "Faces I" and "Faces II", and a Charcoal on Paper piece of Art work, titled "Independence". ^[1]As well the painting of human faces, Elly Van Gelderen has also painted many Pastel on Paper portraits of Animals, such as: "Tiger" (2002), "Karel" (2000) "Eagle" (2002, "Lynx", "Shepherd II" and "Lion and "Young". ^[1] As well as her sheer interest in painting Human and Animal Portraits, Van Gelderen is also particularly fond on painting Landscapes, and has published many pieces of work within the field. Van Gelderen's Landscape oil on canvas paintings include: "Dinosaur" (2002), "Dinosaur Mountains", "Superstitions" and "Dinosaur II". ^[1] In her Artistic career, Van Gelderen has also taken part in many Art Exhibits to showcase her work, such as: the " Central Arizona College" Exhibit in Spring 2002, the "SALT Art Walk" in November 2001 and 2002, the "Memorial Union" at Arizona State University from September 2002 to April 2003, with her collection being titled: "Reflections in Pastel". ^[3] Van Gelderen also showcased her "Portraits" collection at "Phoenix Downtown Arts District", Onyx Collective, in May 2005, and has participated in the "Homecoming Exhibit" several times between October 2005- 2014. ^[3] Van Gelderen also volunteered as an "Art Masterpiece Volunteer" at Kyrene De Las Lomas Elementary School in " Phoenix" from Fall 2010- Fall 2012. ^[3]

Elly Van Gelderen is responsible for a vast variety of Linguistic publications. Van Gelderen published her first book in the 9th edition of the "Linguistik Aktuell" collection on the 28th October 1993, which is titled "The Rise of Functional Categories". ^{[3] [6]} "Linguitik Actuell/ Linguistics Today" provides a platform for original monograph studies into synchronic and diachronic linguistics, with studies in the collection confronting empirical and theoretical problems as these are currently discussed in Syntax, Semantics, Morphology, Phonology, and Systematic Pragmatics with the aim to establish robust empirical generalizations within a universalistic perspective. Van Gelderen published her second contribution to the ''"Linguistik Actuell" in 2000, in the journal's 39th edition, and is titled: "A History of English Reflexive Pronouns", with the book bringing together the introduction of special reflexive pronouns, the loss of verbal agreement and the disappearance of morphological case. ^[3] /> In 2004, Van Gelderen added her third and final addition to the "Linguistik Actuell" collection, "Grammaticalization as Economy",which in short provides much detail on the changes involving the grammaticalization of personal and relative pronouns, topicalized nominals, complementizers, adverbs, prepositions, modals, perception verbs, and aspectual markers, making this the 71st edition in the collection. ^{[3] [7]}

Besides "Linguisik Actuell", in 1997, Van Gelderen contributed to the "Linguistische Arbeiten" series #364, which was titled "Vebral Agreement and the Grammar behind its 'Breakdown'". ^{[3] [8]} In 2010, Van Gelderen published her first solo Linguistic publication, which was titled: "An Introduction to the Grammar of English", and is completely revised and greatly expanded on the first edition. ^{[3] [9]} Following this, in 2011, Van Gelderen published "The Linguistic Cycle: Language Change and Language Faculty", where Elly van Gelderen provides examples of linguistic cycles from a number of languages and language families. ^{[10] [3]} Elly Van Gelderen published her next book in June 2013 With Cambridge University Press,which was titled: "Clause Structure"' . ^{[11] [3]} This details her key areas of work, such as: Grammar, Syntax, Language and Linguistics. In 2014, Van Gelderen published the revised edition of "A History of the English Language" which intricately details the diachronic nature of the English Language, combining internal Linguistic and cultural history. ^{[12] [3]} Van Geldren's next book was published by John Benjamin's publications in Amsterdam in November 2017, and is titled: "Syntax: An Introduction to Minimalism", which was shortly proceeded by: "Analyzing Syntax through texts: Old, Middle and Early Modern English".. ^[13] Van Gelderen's most recent publication to date was published in 2018, and is titled: "The Diachrony of Verb Meaning: Aspect and Argument Structure" in New York by Routledge. ^[14]
