This is Mariah's user page for Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples. I am a junior and anthropology major at Vanderbilt University. I have no idea what I plan to do with the major, but it keeps me interested.
For my final Wikipedia project, I am going to improve the existing Yami people page. It has very little information on these people or their history. I want to explore in depth their past and present, including any struggles they may have faced, and the customs they still practice.
Reference paragraphs were added to Yami people Wikipedia page prior to the revised requirements.
Lead Section...
Detail origin of the Yami name and their preference for the name Tao.
Origins of language and similarities with other languages and tribes of their region.
Relation of Orchid Island to Taiwan and the Philippines.
Include link to Orchid Island page and talk about geographical makeup of the island.
Their combination of Christianity and spiritual beliefs.
How they do not have a single, unified belief structure.
The influence of evil spirits and fear of the dead.
The importance of fishing and the different rules surrounding it dependent on the time of year.
The connection of the boat to the man.
The unification of the entire tribe for the release of a newly built boat.
The type of dress they wear dependent on gender and event.
How their diet is dependent on their fishing practices and their environment.
Their relationship with the Taiwanese government.
How they lack a specific government unique to the island.
The historical implications of foreign relationships.
Their involvement with Taipower, the Taiwanese power company.
Protests involving the deposits of nuclear waste.
