Robert Malkamaki was born on April 23, 2000, in Libertyville, Illinois. His family moved to Lincoln and then Mt. Auburn before settling in Decatur, where he attended St. Patrick School and St. Teresa High School. During his time at St. Teresa, he participated in Scholastic Bowl and WYSE, as well as theatre, football and tennis. He graduated in May 2018 and began attending Loyola University Chicago, where he is currently enrolled as a full-time student and as a member of the Interdisciplinary Honors Program. In the spring of 2021, Malkamaki took a gap semester and worked at H&R Block and Wrigley Field, then returned to Loyola in the fall. He has worked on numerous print and video stories at Loyola, and he was promoted to supervisor at Cudahy Library in May 2022.
Malkamaki participated in successful teams at St. Teresa, including Scholastic Bowl finishing runners-up in the IHSA State Tournament and WYSE finishing fourth at state.
