Barnabus Hughes was an Irish immigrant who helped start the iron industry in the American northeast and is the founding father of Elizabethtown, PA

Barnabus Hughes was born in 1718 in Donegal, Ireland. He came to the US in 1750 and settled in Lancaster, PA. He married Elizabeth Waters, a PA resident. Hughes bought the Bear Tavern and indian trading post in July 1753. He had been leasing it since 1750 from Lazarus Lowrey. He was responsible for supplying Forts Hunter and Swatara during the French and Indian War. Upon purchasing the tavern, he also purchased the land around the tavern and laid out a town that he named for his wife - Elizabethtown, PA

They later moved to Baltimore. After a brief stay, the couple relocated to a part of Frederick County (which later became part of Washington County) in Western Maryland.

Hughes was engaged in the iron trade. He built Mount Etna and other iron furnaces near Black Rocks, above Beaver Creek.

He died in 1780.
