History

The Tanariri festival celebrated in Gujarat in the honor of the twin sister’s Tana and Riri, grand-daughter of Narsinh Mehta. Tana and Riri also known as Nagar sisters were from Vadnagar [1]. It is said that Emperor Akhbar’s musician Tansen was trying to unlit lamps by singing Deepak Raga but he sang so fervently that he got burning fever. Knowing that it could be cured by listening to Meg Malhar Raga, he went to Vadnagar in search of both the sisters. Tana and Riri sung the Malhar rag and brought Tansen back to health. They were called upon to sing in front of Akhbar at his court but as Nagar sisters it was their vow to sing in front of their deity idol and so they committed suicide instead of disobeying Akhbar’s order. They drowned in a well at Vadnagar. Akhbar apologized to their father and asked Tansen to develop a new genre in their honor. Thus, Nagars are said to be very firm with their words, statements, principle, culture, Vow, and ethic. For ethic, principle, code, culture, some of the Nagars, they became or call as Nagar Bandhan Hara or Nagar Bandhara. At present there is a statue of the twin sisters in Vadnagar, Gujarat. [2]Thus Vatnagar is famous for its art, literature, music, drama, architecture, sculpture, learning, and trade. It has always been a city of temples and also known as Chamatkarpur. [3]
