During the time of the First Nations Women, women played a major role in the lifestyle of her family. The Pueblo women lived in the Southwest of America. There were about 250,000 people and 100 villages/towns. There were also seven different language groups in the area. The Pueblo culture was both matrilineal and matrifocal which put the women as the head of the household. These women created irrigation systems while having slaves and servants. The women were the ones to hunt, trade and also farm. The men would take care of the external trade (between groups), defense and warfare. At times they would also help the women tend to the crops but the crops were the women property. The men collected the materials to build the homes and the women did everything else. The women made pottery, blankets and were in charge of all stages of the food production. The women were what helped bring outsiders into their community. If a women was single men would come to the community to marry her. The most important person to define who you are is your mother or grandmother. When a couple marries, the man would go to live with his wife and her family. Divorce is in the Pueblo culture was very civil. Marriage wasn't til death do us part. The couple would agree to split and the husband would leave the household. There was no social stigma in the situation. Both women and men had equal worth within the group. There was also the group of the Iroquois. In 1452 the Iroquois leadership chiefs got together and decided to work together and form the great league of peace and power. This group remained within the agricultural groups. The Iroquois men hunted, traded externally and prepared fields for planting. The women raised the crops, built the homes, took care of all food preparation and took care of the children. The houses were full with extended family members and the Iroquois followed the same marriage rules as the Pueblo culture. The women are the ones who decide who becomes chief, even though only men can be chief. The women were in charge of processing the hunting rewards and preparing the meal. They also decided who gets what part of the animal hunted. Women played a high role in decisions in the Iroquois culture, the women also were able to call for war if they thought it was necessary and they also had the power to stop the men from going to war. The men had to obey the women.
