I'm a physicist, often using a scanning tunneling microscope to nudge atoms into new arrangements to see what electronic and magnetic tricks they do. The atoms are clearly informed that they are part of a physics experiment (see spherical cow) but they persist in unauthorized acts of chemical interaction. So I must learn a bit of chemistry, and Wikipedia is a great help. I edit here and there, with thanks to the real chemists and other editors who fix my blunders along the way.
