Biography

1991–Present: Zouk Kuala Lumpur

The success of the award-winning Zouk KL is the envy for club owners as well as inspiration for its following. Under his stewardship, Cher further raised the profile of Zouk KL on the world stage. This comes with a wealth of experience, familiarity and intimate knowledge of the entertainment and nightlife industry he had amassed in 25 years. His humble beginnings began at Zouk Singapore where he was a resident DJ. Cher was among Zouk’s earliest DJs who helped shape the prodigious sound of the superclub.

Forward-thinking and enterprising, he later ventured into music production. Cher was part of Singapore’s first electronic dance music outfit, Transcendental Experience, earning a deal with Brit label, React Music, in 1996 to release the music in Europe. [4] He left Zouk Singapore a year later in the late 90s to become a festival promoter, organising a string of successful gigs in Singapore and KL, featuring Paul Van Dyk; Incognito; Deep Dish; and John Digweed. Cher’s ambition to bring dance music to a bigger audience saw him co-organised ZoukOut 2000/2001 with Zouk Singapore. [5] In 2004, he launched Zouk KL, which opened to much fanfare. [6] Cher also brought the Zouk experience outdoors in KL.

In the last decade, Zouk KL has consistently won media accolades for Best Club, alongside Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Tourism Awards Nightspot Category. [7] He led the club to earn the endorsement from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture under the National Key Economic Areas – the first for an entertainment venue. [8]In 2011, he conceptualised the new Zouk KL that opens in 2015 at TREC. [9]

2011–Present: TREC
