Bluecanvas Magazine [1] was launched in July of 2009 by Jimmy Yun, Justin Yun, Scott Hitomi and Cecil Kim (Bluecanvas, Inc) giving the community of artists from [2]Bluecanvas.com the opportunity to have their work from the website printed in an internationally distributed publication. Bluecanvas magazine is a multi-genre art magazine published by Bluecanvas, Inc based in Los Angeles, California.

Bluecanvas was established under the auspices that inspiration is not genre specific. The artwork ranges from Illustration, Photography, Architecture, Drawing, Cartoon, Tattoo, Typography, Digital Art, Installation art, Murals, Street Art, Traditional art, to Mixed Media and more. The artwork in Bluecanvas magazine is derived from artists who are all members of Bluecanvas.com, who each is nominated to be published by their peer community. From the top-nominated, a select few are chosen by the Bluecanvas staff to appear in a future issue of the publication.

[3]Bluecanvas magazine is distributed in 11 different countries and carried at over 5,000 newsstands nationwide including:

Origins

Bluecanvas was originally launched as an online artist community on March 16, 2008 by two brothers [4]Jimmy and Justin Yun. Bluecanvas was loosely inspired by online social networking concepts like Myspace and and Facebook among others trending at the time. [5]Justin Yun's background in art after graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California that ultimately initiated Jimmy Yun’s concept of creating a social network for artists- that further became manifested into a magazine and eventually led into an online ecommerce presence.

[6]Cecil Kim joins as a fourth partner and Creative Director of Bluecanvas and Section Studios on August 8th, 2011 after 11 years of employment with SCE Santa Monica Studio where he was a Visual Development Lead and brought the God of War (video game) franchise and many other hit titles to the gaming world. He also taught at Otis College of Art and Design and Art Center College of Design in the entertainment design program and have taught at Gnomon School of Visual Effects. [7]In 2011, British Academy of Film and Television Arts awarded Cecil Kim and Sony Santa Monica Studio art department “Best Artistic Achievement” on God of War III.

Online Artist Community

[8]Bluecanvas.com is an international, multi-genre, online community of artists and fine art connoisseur. It is a place to display art while connecting with other artists and art enthiusiasts. [9]It is dedicated to the creative endeavors of everyone in the community in every way they are privileged to serve.

Fine Art Print Shop

Launched in early 2011, art connoisseurs can customize replicas of various types of Fine art on different media such as prints, posters, giclée, large canvas wraps, framed prints and iPhone skins, in addition to making offers on original artwork.

Special Events

With a sponsorship of Scion (automobile) and collaboration with Otis College of Art and Design, Bluecanvas holds a quarterly event at [10]LA Art Walk where monthly showcase and celebration of the best galleries, artists, photography, restaurants, food trucks, bars and shops, and businesses are held in Downtown Los Angeles.

Launch Event

On July 14th, 2011, [11]Bluecanvas Issue 9 featured the School of Visual Arts (SVA). Located in the heart of New York City- a world capital of art, design, and culture- SVA is widely recognized as one of the finest colleges of arts in the country for its innovative and experimental program philosophies and its unparalleled faculty of professional artists.

On April 14th, 2011, [12]with the sponsorship of Red Engine Studios, Bluecanvas Issue 8 proudly featured Otis College of Art and Design, the Digital Media and the Communication Arts Departments. Otis' Digital Media department focuses on teaching students to learn to communicate and tell stories through art, motion, and design. The Communication Arts department prepares students creatively, intellectually, and technically to meet the rigors of a dynamically evolving array of design professions.
