The Eastern Michigan Eagles men's basketball team has appeared in four NCAA division 1 tournaments, and have a 3-4 record, tied for third best among Michigan colleges. They reached the sweet sixteen in the 1991 NCAA men's division 1 basketball tournament. EMU has competed in the Mid American Conference since joining in 1972, and they have previously competed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1911-1926).

Coach Ben Braun led Eastern Michigan to their first three NCAA division 1 tournament appearances during his 11 year tenure. One of the great highlights in team history came after EMU first round victory over Duke in 1996. Coach Krzyzewski said that EMU beaten us because they are a very good defensive team and they understands how to play team ball.

It is reasonable to say that this season has been disappointing for Eastern Michigan men's basketball. After finishing a 17-15 record last year, the team recorded it's first winning season under sixth year coach Charles Ramsey. Many were expecting the program to continue to improve. The eagles have taken a step back this season at a 6-16 record and a 3-6 Mid American Conference, the Eagles are sitting near the bottom of the MAC. Last season is when coach Ramsey had his best season in 6 years. The eagles has lost 16 games and each lost were by six points or fewer. Coach Ramsey could have made better chemistry for the team to come up with big wins. They are a very tough team and you can see that they are willing to win big games. The eagles only have recorded one back to back wins once this season. When your longest winning streak of the season is two and you can't get over that proverbial hump, someone must be head accountable. That is why some have called for coach Ramsey's dismissal from the helm of the EMU basketball program.

EMU reached the final four of the 1972 NCAA college division championship, led by All American George Gervin, who is the NBA Hall of famer selected as one of the 50th greatest players in NBA history.

Earl Boykins played college basketball at Eastern Michigan University from 1994 to 1998. He became an undrafted player in 1998 to the Denver nuggets. He is the only player from EMU that is still playing in the NBA. On February 27th, 2011, Boykins no. 11 jersey was retired and raised to the rafters in a ceremony at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation center.
