About
I grew up on the
coastal plain of
North Carolina, from which I escaped to attend the
University of North Carolina. After graduating from UNC, I moved on to graduate school at the
University of Illinois in
Urbana-Champaign. Nevertheless, I still consider myself an adamant
Tar Heel. At Illinois, I've taught courses in
poetry,
science fiction, and
composition. For a few years, I lived in
Chicago while writing my
dissertation. Recently, I returned to North Carolina and the
Triangle metro area.
When I'm not writing about
Joseph Conrad,
H. G. Wells, and other
fin de siecle writers, I enjoy listening to
hip hop, especially left-field and
alternative hip hop, including
J Dilla,
Madlib, and
Exile. I also enjoy reading
graphic novels,
New Weird and other
slipstream fiction.
I contribute mostly during the summer, but I monitor a few important articles throughout the year.
