Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was born on January 19 1807 in Virginia [1] and lived until October 12 1870.He was a famous general of the American civil war.Lee was a general for the confederate army. [2] He was the reason for many victories of the confederacy. Without general lee the war may have ended much sooner and less blood could have been shed.
Education
Robert was basically destined for military greatness. He was accepted into United States Military Academy at west point. In 1829 he graduated second in his class. After being a student at west point he became a superintendent and taught many of the men whom he would command later in his military career. [3]
southern leader
Before the civil war began General lee was asked by Abraham Lincoln to lead in the Union Army. Lee rejected the presidents offer and took the side of the confederates.Lee experienced great success as a military leader of the south. The amount of battles in which he lost was minimal. He was by far the best leader the south had.
The end of Lees career
In Mid 1865 the confederate army had shrank to 35,000 Lee`s army tried to join forces with General Johnston, another confederate unit. However every time he would try to move around The forces lead by Ulysses S. Grant he was be cut off. Lee knew that his army could no longer hold off union troops. In April The confederates arrived in the small Virginia town of Appomattox. [4] After arriving Lee knew the war was over that afternoon Lee and grant met. The two men talked about the terms of surrender After all was settled Lee mounted his horse and rode away. Lee left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for centuries to come.
