Annette Arjoon-Martins (born 1964) is a Guyanese conservationist and businesswoman. [1] [2]

Early life

Arjoon's mother was Arawak, and her father was Indo-Guyanese. She was initially raised by her maternal grandmother in Siriki, a village in Pomeroon-Supenaam (region 2). She was later sent to Georgetown to live with her father's sisters. In the 1980's, her father's family was involved in the timber business; she worked there initially after completing her secondary school at Codrington College in Barbados. Disliking the business, Arjoon decided to leave for flight training in Trinidad and Tobago. After earning a private pilot licence, she returned to Guyana and began flying charter routes. An English scientist on one such flight introduced Arjoon to the life cycle of sea turtle, which drew her attention to the hazards these animals faced. In 2000, she founded the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society. [3] [4] [5]

Arjoon was one of the 2008 recipients of the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence. [3]

Personal life

Arjoon has a son and a daughter from her first marriage. She married musician Dave Martins in 2009.
