Reading Memorial High School Girls Basketball, Reading, MA

The Reading Memorial High School Girls Basketball program was the 2012 Division II Massachusetts State Champions. Reading Girls basketball capped an undefeated (25-0) 2012 season by defeating Central Champion Tyngsborough at the DCU Center in Worcester on March 17, 2012. This was the first state championship for Reading Memorial High School in the sport of basketball. In route to the state championship, Reading defeated Salem, Concord-Carlisle and Arlington Catholic to win the North Sectional trophy. Then, in perhaps one of the greatest high school basketball games played at the Boston Garden, defeated previously undefeated and South Sectional champion Scituate, in an overtime thriller, 71-64.

In the last 14 years under current Head Coach Kim Penney, Reading Girls Basketball has amassed a 221-89 record. Reading has qualified for the MIAA state tournament each of the last 12 years. Over the span of the last 14 seasons, Reading has won the North Reading Christmas Tournament twice (1999,2000), the Austin Prep Christmas Tournament (2001), the Westwood Winter Classic (2006), the St. Mary’s (Lynn, MA) Spartan Classic (2010), the York Wildcat Tournament in York, ME (2010), and the Comcast Tournament (2012). In addition, Reading Girls basketball reached the Division II North Sectional Title Game twice in 2008 and 2009, eventually losing to Lincoln-Sudbury and Arlington Catholic respectively.


Reading Basketball is a proud member of the Middlesex League. The Middlesex League Liberty Division consists of Arlington, Belmont, Lexington, Reading, Winchester and Woburn. The Middlesex League Freedom Division consists of Burlington, Melrose, Stoneham, Wakefield, Watertown, and Wilmington. Reading Girls Basketball has won six league titles in its history: 1978, 1979, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2010, Reading shared the league title with Stoneham and Melrose as each team posted an identical record of 15-3 in league play.
