Kathy Ryan is the director of photography at The New York Times Magazine [1] and has won several awards for her work with the magazine including a Lucie Award [2] for Picture Editor of the Year in 2003 and 2015.
Biography & Career
Kathy Ryan grew up in New Jersey and knew from a young ages that she had an interest in art. She attended Rutgers University, Douglass College where she had little interest in photography. [3]
After graduating, she worked for a French photo company as a document librarian. Ryan worked her way through the company and eventually left for a job as a deputy photo editor at The New York Times Magazine. She spent two years at that position before being promoted to the Directory of Photography and that is where she has remained for the past 20 years. [3] [1] [4]
Education
Kathy Ryan attended Rutgers University with a double major in Art and Art History with the intent of becoming a painter. [1]
Career
Ryan’s first job after college was working for Sygma. She was hired on the spot as a photo librarian and began her work immediately. [5] At that job it was her responsibility to deliver SYGMA's pictures to news distributors across the country. One of the distributors was The New York Times Magazine and it was there that she met Peter Howe, at the time the head photography editor. Howe saw potential in Ryan and offered her a job as a deputy photo editor. She stayed at that position for two and a half years until Howe left The New York Times Magazine and Ryan replaced him. [1]
What makes Kathy Ryan a unique photography editor is her desire to hire photographers to shoot in formats to which they aren’t accustomed. She likes to challenge creators, and likes those, who are not afraid to get out of their comfort zones and try something new. [1] [4] For one feature she paired several art photographers together to capture the essence of Times Square. Their non photo-journalistic experience brought an interesting and unique view to the city and the magazine. Ryan likes to challenge the best of the best in photography to get outside of their comfort zones to take on a new perspective for The New York Times Magazine. [3]
In 2014, Kathy Ryan published her first solo book of images with Aperture. The publication started on her Instagram page, where she used the unique architecture of of Renzo Piano and the natural lighting of the sun to create interesting images that are easily over looked, daily. Office Romance shows that it is not necessary to have a big, fancy camera to be able to take magnificent pictures. [6]
After she won the Canon Picture Editor of the Year award from Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan she was a juror for the competition. In 2015, she helped pick a winner for the previous year's published photos. Ryan, also, held the position of jury chair for the the Art Directors Club in 2010. [7] The ADC rewards, and connects, photographers from all over the world for their creativity. It's gallery is located in Manhattan, and it is there that artists are given a platform to appreciate and showcase different types of art, and network with other members of the photography world. [8]

2012 - Royal Photographic Society's Annual Award for Outstanding Service to Photography [6] "This award carries with it an Honorary Fellowship of The Society. 2007 - The Griffin Museum - Lifetime Achievement Award - This award is given to those whose dedication to photography creates a, "far reaching impact." [10]
1997 - Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan - Canon Picture Editor of the Year [11] - The Visa Pour L'Image in perpignan is an international competition between the best photographs published the previous years. The selected images are voted on by a jury and photographers and editors can win. [11]

Books & Exhibitions
Office Romance is a picture book by Kathy Ryan and was published by Aperture in October of 2014. Her book, which began as a series of posts on her Instagram, displays pictures she takes from inside the New York Times Magazine office. It not only showcases furniture and typical utensils found inside an office but also captures the unique lighting of New York City as well as the spirit of the people with whom she works. [6]

The New York Times Magazines Photographs is another picture novel put together by Kathy Ryan and Abelardo Morell. "It reflects upon and interrogates the very nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in history." [14] Published in 2011, Ryan edited all of the images that are features in this book, and was also published by Aperture. [14]
