The Disaster Republic ( Korean: 사고 공화국; Hanja: 事故共和國) is a neologism referring to the frequency of large-scale disasters during the Kim Young-sam administration of the Sixth Republic of Korea. The series of disasters began with the Uam Sangga Apartment collapse in 1993 and culminated in the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995 which remains the largest peacetime disaster in South Korean history. The period of the Disaster Republic coincided with the first civillian government of South Korea.
