Fashion law is a legal field encompassing issues that arise throughout the life of an article of clothing or a fashion accessory. Fundamental issues in fashion law include intellectual property; business and finance, with subcategories ranging from employment law to real estate; international trade and government regulation, including questions of safety and sustainability; and consumer culture and civil rights. Fashion Law also includes related areas such as textile production, modeling, media, and the cosmetics and perfume industries. [1]
Fashion law is a rapidly growing field of practice and study. [2] In a 2008 article, Susan Scafidi, the first U.S. law professor ever to offer a course in Fashion Law and the founder of the Fashion Law Institute, a nonprofit based at Fordham Law School and the world’s first academic center dedicated to the subject, [3] [4] wrote that fashion law was only then starting to be recognized as a distinct field. [5] [6] Since the launch of the Fashion Law Institute with the support of Diane von Furstenberg and the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2010, a number of other institutions around the world have offered courses or programs in the area of fashion law. These include the University of Milan, [7] the University of Insubria, [8] the Instituto Brasileiro de Negócios e Direito da Moda, [9] University at Buffalo Law School, [10] Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, [11] New York Law School, [12] New York University, [13] Loyola Law School, [14] the Moda Hukuku Enstitusu in Turkey, [15] and the annual Fashion Law Week at Howard University.
