During World War I, the Union of South Africa committed its own land forces to support the Allied cause in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The South African Air Force was created in 1920 but for seaward defence, the Union relied on the Royal Navy with a small domestic naval contingent forming part of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR). As had occurred with the creation of the air force, the Union of South Africa government created the "South African Naval Service (SANS)” by decree in October 1921. It was to be staffed by the existing members of the RNVR (South African Division) reporting to SANS rather than the Royal Navy. These arrangements were formalised by legislation promulgated in the Government Gazette in January 1923. [1] "World War 2 at Sea: South African Naval Force: Ship Histories, Convoy Escort Movements, Casualty Lists 1939-1947". The National Museum: Royal Navy.</ref>
The “South African Naval Service” title and arrangement continued until January 1940 when the Seaward Defence Force (SDF) was formed, taking over all responsibilities of the former SANS which was suspended but not actually disbanded. The Seaward Defense Force name continued until XXXX 1942 when it was renamed “South African Naval Force” (SANF) and all members of the old RNVR (South African Division) were transferred into the SANF. The South African Naval Force title remained in use until 1 January 1951 when it was changed to the “South African Navy” (SAN). [1]
