The Lehigh Valley is geologically part of the Great Appalachian Valley and the folded Ridge and Valley Appalachians. The region is named for the Lehigh River, which runs through it, and owes much of its development and history to the anthracite supplies, timber, and ores which poured down the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company's Lehigh Canal (LC&N, 1818) and railroads LC&N built or encouraged parallel to it. [a] These transportation improvements overcame the countries first energy crises due to deforestation in the early 19th century. The Canal operated into the Great Depression, feeding ports up and down the Delaware River, the Delaware Canal, and transoceanic demand, and was integral to the regional industrial revolution in the greater Philadelphia-Trenton-Wilmington.
Consequently, culturally and historically, the Valley runs from the drainage divide in the Solomon Gap just north of Mountain Top where coal flowed up the Ashley Planes from the Wyoming Valley coal beds in Luzerne County and across the divide, then downhill to the world through White Haven, thence down through the Lehigh Gorge, past the historic Mauch Chunk terminus of the Summit Hill & Mauch Chunk Railroad (SH&MC, the nation's 2nd operating railway and its first roller coaster, and the state's first railroad—though unchartered compared to those chartered or incorporated awaiting charters and land grants.) and 3rd founded Railroad, [b] through historic locks and dams below Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) or along side the canal which fueled, in the largest sense, the American Industrial Revolution and operated into the Great Depression. The American Canal age had its epicenter at the confluence of the Lehigh and Delaware rivers where no less than five major canals [2] met major rivers and coastal waterways, and all gave the people and industries of the Lehigh Valley access to minerals and markets via Easton from Connecticut, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
