{{ Use Australian English}}{{ Use dmy dates}} Main Roads Western Australia controls the major roads in the state's Great Southern (Western Australia) region. [1] There are four main highways in the region: South Coast Highway, a coastal route connecting to the neighbouring South West and Goldfields-Esperance regions; Albany Highway, a direct route to Perth via the Wheatbelt; Great Southern Highway, an alternative route north that branches off Albany Highway; and Muirs Highway, an inland route connecting Albany Highway at Mount Barker to Manjimup in the South West region. A series of main roads connect towns to the highway, and local roads provide additional links and access to the coast. Roads are often named after the towns or areas they connect. [2] [3]
Albany Highway | |
---|---|
Location | Albany – Beaufort River |
Length | 190.99 km [4] (118.68 mi) |
Route number | ![]() |
In the Great Southern region, Albany Highway connects Albany with the Wheatbelt region, where the highway continues on to the state capital Perth. The majority of the road is part of State Route 30. It crosses into the region from the Wheatbelt at Beaufort River. The highway encounters few towns along it's 190-kilometre (120 mi) stretch in the Great Southern: Kojonup and Mount Barker are on the highway, but are 100 kilometres (62 mi) apart; more towns are approximately 30 kilometres (20 mi) to the east on Great Southern Highway, including Woodanilling, Katanning, and Tambellup. [4] [5]
Closer to Albany, there are large tracts of blue gum eucalypt plantations. Twelve kilometres (7.5 mi) from the road's south-eastern terminus, it passes Albany Airport. The highway passes by suburban areas before intersecting South Coast Highway at a Y intersection, and only 100 metres (330 ft) beyond it, a large five-way roundabout. This roundabout is the southern terminus of State Route 30, and connects the highway with Chester Pass Road (which continues east to South Coast Highway), North Road, and Hanrahan Road. The final two-and-a-half-kilometre (1.6 mi) stretch takes the highway south-east into the centre of Albany. [4] [2] [5]
