The Light Behind God is a book written by Rene Jorgensen, a philosopher and member of the International Association for Near Death Studies ( IANDS). In the book Jorgensen investigates the parallels between the afterlife and the nature of religion through his research of 16 people who have had a near death experience.

While near death experiences are mostly talked about as evidence of life after death, Jorgensen adds to this that most people who have a near death experience will also say that they experience God beyond death. His study found that 80% described the core of their experience, which many people call “the Light,” as an experience of “God.” [1]

He explains that while the otherworldly experience is often beyond description still the combination of a very powerful sensation of being outside the body and a profound feeling of joy, peace and love on the other side, is what makes people conclude that the experience is God or part of God.

One testimony in the book points this out:

“It’s a kind of love that can’t even be explained. It is so hard to explain what being unconditionally loved is...or what it feels like. But it feels like...it feels like the safest, most exalted feeling…ahh…well, you see its ineffable, you run out of words when you try to explain it. But there is no other source that something like that could come from, except some power...and that power is love. Now I call it God.” [2]

Based on this finding and support from more than 30 years of research into near death experiences, Jorgensen argues that these people experience a living God beyond death that is an original source of religion. Working on this assumption, he uses his research of the 16 near death experiences to ask questions about God and life after death.

Thereby, Jorgensen claims that the book is an objective investigation of a true and living God, which is the source behind God in all religions.
