The Pluto in Scorpio Generation is a popular concept in astrology identified as the generation when Pluto travelled through Scorpio between the years 1983–1995 in the tropical zodiac. [1] [2] According to modern astrology, Pluto is one of the ruling planets of Scorpio. This transition of Pluto is roughly on par with the time frame identified with the Millenial Generation, and thus is commonly associated with it. [3] [4] Astrology has been identified as a potent cultural meme to both Millenials and Gen Z generations in the Digital Age. [5]
Pluto was discovered in 1930 at the Lowell Observatory as a result of a search for Planet X, [6] and is astronomically glyphed with the symbol ♇ which honors Percival Lowell and the newly added planet.
When Pluto was discovered it was assigned, according to the rule of astrological planetary ruler, to Scorpio, based heavily upon the Greek mythic associations of its naming Hades (the Greek name for the lord of the underworld), as well as the zeitgest (according to astrologers at the time) of 1930's Europe, [7] based on this apparent affinity to Scorpio which has since ancient times been associated with death and rebirth. This is also associated with Pluto's large orbital period which is symbolically linked to the longterm process of birth and death. [8]
According to Jeffrey Wolf Green, author of Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey Of The Soul [9] and a leading thinker in evolutionary astrology, the merging of Pluto with Scorpio entails a deep-seated soul searching and regeneration which taps into deeply unconscious feelings. [10] Pluto is an outer planet which because of its long orbital period spends between 12 and 30 years in each zodiac sign, residing in a single sign for entire age groups and thus responsible for astrological affection of generations rather than individuals. However, the position of Pluto still occupies a different house and set of angles in each individual's birth chart.
Evolutionary astrology assumes that the soul undergoes reincarnation and from that interprets that Pluto is closely linked to the soul and its past life incarnations. Because of its extreme and cosmically deep position as the last major identified body of the Solar System, its supposed impact upon the astrological subject is profound and difficult to comprehend. [ citation needed]
Since Pluto is the most external 'planet' (prior to its dwarf planet classification) and the zodiac's sexigestimal system based in Babylonian mathematics approximate the greatest range for astrological transit, its generational signification is ascribable to the different generations (at least according to US social classifications) belonging to the Boomer Generation, Gen X, Millenials, Gen Z, and so on. [11]
Thus, according to astrological interpretations, Gen X is considered in the domain of Virgo and Libra, and the Baby Boomers in that of Leo and Virgo, while individuals born during Generation Z fall under the period of Sagittarius and Capricorn. However, each transition of Pluto takes place according to Pluto's elliptical orbit, and thus Scorpio's transit is more concentrated, spending most of its time in its home sign. [12]
