Spruce Street is notable as one of William Penn's original streets in his plan for building the "1200 acre site of Philadelphia." [1] Spruce Street is one of the original in Penn's plan that are named after a tree traversing east-west, termed an "odanym". [2] [3]
There was an anecdote written by John Fanning Watson who told a story of "water in basements" in houses along Spruce Street, which he said may have pointed to when the street was a water bog, which may have had water vessels sailing on it. [4]
At 8th Street and Spruce is the historic Pennsylvania Hospital, which was founded by Benjamin Franklin. [5] Between 11th and 12th Street, Spruce Street is also notable for the LGBT community. [6]
