LEONARD WEATHER JR.
Leonard Weather Jr. R.Ph. M.D.., is an American gynecologist who specializes in infertility, fibroid tumors, pelvic pain and endometriosis. Furthermore he is a pharmacist, health educator, ordained minister, artist, author and photographer. He is also the inventor of the surgical procedure Optical Dissection Pelviscopy to assist in the prevention of organ injury during laparoscopy, and is past president of the National Medical Association (NMA).

Biography
Early Years
Weather was born on July 6, 1944 in Albany, GA and while still an infant his family moved to Utica, New York where he grew up. His father, Leonard Weather Sr was married to Lucille Reese Weather (a housewife) and served in the U.S. Army. After an injury he was discharged from the Army and later received training as an auto mechanic. His father started an automobile body and fender repair business and was the first African American to own such a business in Upstate New York (Utica-Rome area).
Education
Weather graduated from Utica Free Academy High School in 1962, following this he attended Mason City Junior College, in Mason City, Iowa. He transferred to Howard University College of Pharmacy in 1963 where he an earned a B.S. Pharm in 1967. While at Howard he was an influential and prolific member of Chi Delta Mu Fraternity's Alpha Chapter. Subsequently he moved to Chicago, IL, practiced pharmacy for three years and enrolled in Rush Medical College in 1971. Weather received his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1974. While at Rush he was President of the Rush Medical College Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), received the Peck Award for excellence and was SNMA National Secretary. Dr. Weather then went on to the Johns Hopkins University Hospital were he completed his internship in Gynecology and Obstetrics in 1975 and his Gynecology and Obstetrics Residency and Fellowship in 1978. He commenced his private practice in New Orleans, Louisiana in June 1978.
Career
Dr. Weather practiced gynecology and obstetrics for a number of years then converted to gynecology with an emphasis on infertility, fibroid tumors, pelvic pain and endometriosis. Whereby he has given over 150 peer review presentations on his areas of concern. Additionally he was an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Xavier University College of Pharmacy and clinical instructor at Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans, LA. He is past president of the New Orleans Medical Association, Louisiana Medical Association and Northern Louisiana Medical Association. He is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Past Treasurer of Black Congress on Health, Law and Economics and Grand President of Chi Delta Mu Fraternity, twice. While serving as Grand President of Chi Delta Mu Fraternity, he was able to establish chapters in Monrovia, Liberia and Bridgetown, Barbados. Dr. Weather has been and is a member of numerous State of Louisiana Governor appointed Commissions, Past Chair of Region V National Medical Association (NMA) and member of the National Medical Association Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. He is President of the New Orleans Health Alliance, a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors to the Endometriosis Association, American Medical Association's Minority Affairs Section, Board of Directors of the Catholic Health Initiative, Louisiana Health Care Commission Advisory Board, Past Co-Chair of The Commission to End Health Care Disparities and Past Member of the Cobb Institute.
NMA
Dr. Weather was installed as the 111th President of the National Medical Association, August 3, 2010. A few days after giving his Inaugural Address titled The NMA has advocated and worked for health care reform...now what? 1. He commenced his presidential journey by traveling to Melbourne Australia to a United Nations Global Health Meeting. The journey took him to over 93 meetings in more than 42 cities, and to give over 64 presentations to organizations, business and government entities. Under Dr. Weather's leadership 9 superlative and innovative Presidential Task Forces, and initiatives where developed to meet the needs of the organizations members and the communities that they served.

He gave awards to 14 miraculous and deserving people one of which was President Barrack Obama. President Obama received, the NMA Scroll of Merit, which is the organization's highest award. Dr. Weather also participated in numerous White House meetings and attended President Obama's Holiday Party, December, 2010. Remarkably he arrived back from a Global Health Disaster Preparedness Meeting in Rwanda, "the land of over 1000 hills," a few days before the July 2011 NMA Annual Meeting in time to be interviewed on ABC News, "Good Morning America," and the end of the NMA's 111th Presidents' journey. In August 2011 he became the immediate past president of the NMA. However he is still deeply involved with many of the initiatives that he engendered such as environmental health, obesity, disaster preparedness, global health (particularly relevant to his project in the Republic of South Sudan) and a number of others.
