Libertonia

Libertonia is a concept city likely to be started in one of three identified African locations sometime in second half of 2007 or in 2008.

Unique Features of Libertonia

Libertonia has a number of unique features that designers think will shape the 21st century city:

1 It is a completely privatised, tax free zone where virtually everything will be run by private companies. Even for goods that are public goods and thus require public funding, the services will be provided by private companies

2 It is a dense city employing the principles of smart growth and a number of other environmental principles concerning energy use.

3 It is a right-regulated city incorporating the deregulation and right regulation insights of the last ten years.

4 It is an open source city where software that makes the city run will be provided free to the citizens (though the city may corporately pay for it initially if it is not provided freely by the (global) open source community.)

5 It is an anti-poverty city. By bringing companies from other countries due to the tax free nature of the zone, Libertonia is predicted to create 100,000 jobs for the local African people across all sectors and levels of the local economy.

Location

The most likely locations for Libertonia are in order: Mozambique, Kenya, Botswana and Zambia. This is in terms of the stage that the respective governments are in approving the project and passing the relevant legislation.

Libertonia in the Media

Libertonia was featured in Maverick (magazine) on the 22 March 2007 in an article by journalist Ivo Vegter [ [1]]
